Handy to have, even if your laptop has an optical drive.

Upgrade your HDD to an SSD, stick the old HDD in a CD bay adaptor.

NB this drive will read DVD's but will only write to CD's - so it's old stock. But you could swap your existing DVD writer to it.

Also be aware these external DVD drives do not stand up to a lot of abuse, use a protective cover if throwing them into backpack.
