After the start the route goes up without delay and 13.9 kilometres into the race the first pass is crested. This one goes by the euphonious name of Passo di Monte Corce di Comelico, or the Cross Comelico. Yet, the agony is kept in store for later. Except for 1 kilometre of 9%, the climb is not too steep.
Via Padola and Santo Stefano di Cadore the riders arrive in the valley of the River Piave. A short climb up the Cima Sappada takes them to the next valley: Val Degano. Descending to Tolmezzo the Sella Chianzutan appears, an 11.8 kilometres climb at 5.5%. Steep ramps alternate with short drops.
Between the top of the Sella Chianzutan and the finish line are 86 kilometres.
No hurdles until Aviano, which is the base of the closing climb to ski resort Piancavallo. The ascent kicks in hard with an average grade of 9.4% for the first 6 kilometres, while the the sixth kilometre is steepest, averaging an intimidating 11.6%. Until kilometre 9 the ascent shows no mercy but then the climb flattens out bit by bit and the last kilometres before the top are merely false flat.

Whoever wins in Piancavallo follows in the footsteps of Marco Pantani. In 1998 Il Pirata took a stage here before he went on to win the Giro d’Italia that year.
The first three riders on the line take time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the last intermediate sprint (at kilometre 156.3) comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds

Nibali and Pinot will deffo go for it...
Quintana ? Mehh.... Busted flush i think, nothing there and i think TomDu has his measure now after yesterday, and is in Faketana's head.

    Allez Tom !!

Sorry for being OT here but have Eurosport done away with the monthly sub option? Mines up today and I normally just get it ad-hoc when theres enough cycling on to watch now and cancel right away so I don't forget later on. Only a day or year option there now :(

The yearly one is half price so might just go with that, there's easily 29.99 worth of cycling between now and October.

This has "Nothing til the last climb" written all over it with regard to the GC, hope I am wrong. Tom should have a bit of a team today, unless they go off at a ballistic pace.

Attacking on a toilet break, all decorum has been abandoned it seems, which personally I find sad.

Was it poor timing on the wee break again or just pure opportunism? Pretty poor reflection on them if thats what it was and what they think they have to do to win.

the only defence for that type of carry on is if the racing is on, as they say. you can hardly call the racing on this early in the start. sadly this might precipitate a new era of racing where the unwritten rule book no longer stands. im tired of seeing moviestar finding sucess of the back of this type of gray area behaviour.

Whatever's happened today & if it is being attacked cos of a toilet break that is sad I agree, but if it is a consequence of Dumoulin's words yday, really stupid & in racing terms immature for Dumoulin to verbally attack competitors imo like he did. Of course it's understandable why emotions might spill over for him particularly after teh time he lost a few days ago but yday was simply bike racing. It's enough to be so powerful & dominant without rubbing your rivals' noses in it when it looks like they're running out of options & chances, & then making things potentially more complicated & difficult for yself & your team.

Is it so simple though that it was an attack on the pink jersey after toilet break. There's a hell of a lot of other people who got distanced in the same moment. How did that come about?

agreed, he had nothing to gain by criticizing nibs and quintana. needless move

CN updates absolutely useless at the mo. Anyone have an accurate time gap from Nibali/Quintana to Dumoulin?

The GPS is jumping all over the place, so no way of knowing, seems to be around 40secs to a minute.

Nairo is on his own, as is Tom, Nibali has 2 men in the front group.

Pretty poor show tbh, if you can't beat him fair and square, bend the un-written rules so it seems. Was ouch and go there for Tom for a good while but he got lucky with the makeup of the split, a lot of teams with good reasons to chase it down.
