that dialog box can be shown in other cases too such as damaged files or even viruses.

Run system file checker to search for corrupted files and ChkDsk then to repair any minimal damage.

Both of these can be performed from the command prompt, if you can't access Windows.

thanks for your helps guys, not good at this end of things. When i turned pc on it was in the command screen. It started to do a file check or something, then it did a chdsk check and then told me to do a DPS self test in F10 which I did but no joy. I was afraid to try anything else here so got it to boot up to windows.

    Below is the specky report.

Edit: the only message I got from the command screen was: ' detects imminent failure'

if you don't want to fork out for a new desktop, you could try CEX for a replacement HD.

Realloc count is like your tyre starting to go bald. Uncorrectable sector count is a hole in the side of the tyre. Drive will die reasonably soon.

    1. Turn off the PC and leave it off.
    2. Go buy a new drive
    3. Install new drive and use any imaging program of choice to copy the old drive to the new one
    4. Remove dead drive
    5. Boot up to a perfectly functional system just how you left off (probably)

    A 250GB 3.5" can be purchased for 30-40 now.

I've bought 3 1TB SATA 3.5 drives recently for less than 30 STG

So 10 stg per 1TB drive, that's impressive. You have a link?

No, separately. 1st 2 were 20,3rd was 25. Plus UK shipping+PMotel. Look for auction-only with cheap shipping, about to end soon.
