Rick O`Shea axed

Rick O Shea has been axed as host of the poetry program on RTE Radio 1, strange, I would have thought he would have been ideal to do more work over on the senior network.

With a name like that he wouldn't suit the more sedate station.

Not surprising. He was never right for that programme. Pat Boran did a fine job up until he was replaced by "The Ricochet".

He has the name of one poem prepared: Shelley’s Ozymandias. “And I didn’t do it for my Leaving Cert,” he adds. But he can’t name two poems he loves, let alone three. “It’s really hard to choose,” he says eventually, mentioning something about how it was “an honour” to sit near Paul Durcan at a recent book awards ceremony."

Have you actually read any of Seamus Heaney’s books?
“No. I haven’t read him all, by any stretch of the imagination.”

Having lots of Twitter and Facebook followers is all fine and dandy, but this is the national flagship broascaster and that start was a disaster.

Always thought he was the wrong fit for the poetry show. I heard his 2FM show a few weekends ago and it just sounds so... dated. At least he's trying something new with book clubs etc but I fear his time on national radio is coming to an end.
