Dropped external hd

Hi all looking for some advice, I dropped my external hd a couple of weeks back and it has been unreadable on various different computers since . The hd sounds like it's still spinning when connected.what I need to know is can/how/if the data can be retrieved (all music files) thx

Depending on the make/model it is often possible to crack open the case and connect the hdd another computer. It it a portable or desktop enclosure?
