Apple Mail wrong recipient issue

Has anyone had a problem with an Apple Mail Sent items search, which shows an email was sent to a recipient even though you didn't send it?

I recently searched for a sent email using a keyword and in the results it showed I'd sent an email to someone, even though I hadn't.

I repeated the search several times with the same result then the email just disappeared!

Does anyone know why this happens? It's not the first time I've experienced it.

To be clear, this was an email that you wrote and sent, just not to the person in question? And this person is in your contacts, i.e. not a random stranger?

I noticed the other day my iCloud email account that I never use had seemingly sent spam mail to a number of recipients. I went to look at it yesterday to see if I could figure out what happened but the sent mails had vanished.

Just in case - change your password, enable two factor authentication if you haven't already, and check what apps have access to your account.
