This can only be done if you're physically in possession of the reg cert itself to hand in to cashier when attending the tax office. VIN number is not required for renewal, just for imports and brand new motors afaiw

I never had to hand in a reg cert to tax the car. Just handed in the form and the money. Mind you it's been about 2 years since I last taxed it in the office.

Only if you're becoming a new owner do you need the physical cert. Which is what all this thread is referring to. If it's just a renewal, form and payment is all that's needed. You must be just renewing tax as opposed to registering a change of owner and taxing?

Once you get the cert you can use the last number of digits of the cert as the PIN to tax it online. But then, of course, you need the cert............

    Don't derail the thread.

If caught driving without tax, one could probably talk his/her way out by being polite and constructive with the Gardi. But once the ticket is issued, by traffic warden or a Garda, I can't see it being revoked.

Thanks for all the advice and the helpful PM I received.

Just to wrap this up I got a call from Cork City council to let me know that my appeal has been accepted and I won't have to pay any fine. :D

That was my logic, that you couldn't do without the PIN, but you can do it over the phone without the PIN. Hadn't seen the PIN recovery form, maybe it's new?

Not new. I done it 2 years ago.

People keep saying you can tax the car without the cert yet no-one seems to be able to clearly say how to do this. Now someone is saying you can tax it in advance. Strange...........

    Very very easy.

Day 1. VLC gets sent to Shannon with your details on it.
Day 2. You go to motortax.ie and click pin retrieval. You enter your details. It will either say "details don't match" that means the transfer hasn't happened yet. Or it will give you a new pin. You can tax it there and then.

I've bought cars over the years and I've had the tax disc back before the VLC.

*day 1,2 etc can be hit and miss, so it could be day 3,4.

But, but, but you got caught OP, you have to pay the fine! Methinks a few high horses might have to be put out to pasture tonight.

There was a thread a week or two back about non display of an NCT disc where the keyboard warriors were rightly put in their place. You would think they'd learn.

    Guess not.
