I've heard a new bar is opening in the old Rayners bar. Possibly a craft beer place similar to one they (whoever they are!) have in Tullamore. Any know any more? Be great to have somewhere new to go for a change, if it's run right.

I love how it was rebranded last year, but I never saw it open.

I drove past it last night and it looks very fresh! Newly painted & big hanging baskets. Be interesting to see if they can make a go of it

It was rebranded last year as The Pink Flamingo. I drove past it in town one night and there was a Garda van outside it, with a couple of Gardai pulling the heads of some young lads.

Their calling it "The Junction Beer & Wings Bar"
Looks like it's a Carrig Breweing Co bar... Should be great.

    Looking forward to going in.

For some reason "Multiple Personality Disorder" springs to mind when I think of that place. I do wonder now is this the rise of Murphys Bar and similar, selling craft beer and outrageous food challanges in Athlone and the Midlands.

Murphys Law is a grand spot.
Tbh the more bars selling "craft" beers the better... A bit of variety is always a good thing

Yup, it's Carrig opening it. And best of all, they'll do it right. They recently opened a pub in Tullamore too.

Yep... I haven't ventured over to Tanyard Lane yet.

Good to hear this and I'll look forward to trying it out. A few of us were only talking the other night about how that part of town has died a bit, you used to have Rayners and Biddy Mulligan's along with one or two more drawing a crowd down that way, I'd barely venture past The Prince anymore.

The Prince is shyte unless there is something on to bring you in...
There aren't any really great pubs left about town any more.... Hopefully a turn is on the horizon..

The Prince is my least favourite bar in Athlone, probably because I was dragged in there by friends nearly every week at one stage. But it's a soulless place with no character. The only times I could really tolerate the place was when there was a battle of the bands thing on, or just some good live music in general (i.e. not some worthless cover bands).

Nuts is still a grand spot.
The malt house is great if you like decent beer.
Hopefully the junction will be another good one... Great building so it's a start

I agree, great pint too, just rarely go up that far for some reason.

I don't rate the Prince too highly myself, just seem to end up in there the odd time on the way to Karma or the odd time there'd be some sort of party in it that I've to go to.

Hopefully this new bar does well. It's a good sized building in a good location. The thoroughfare between Golden Island and Athlone Town Centre is a busy one with footfall and this place is just a few doors off the track.

It used to be a great spot back in the days when it was Rayners. It used to be busy at weekends, and during the daytime they did good food, I used to work nearby and often went in for lunch.

Actually myself and himself got together after a night out in Rayners, the rest they say is history!

However any business that has opened in there since doesn't seem to have done well at all for what ever reasons.

What happened to Rayners that it went down, i remember the late bars with it being packed and many a great night, the crowd or a new pub must have happened, cant remember back that far

    Was before that wasn't it?

From what I remember they lost their late license due to noise complaints and it fell out of favour with people then, think a lot of people went to the Palace which had a late license.

Could be a good thing all these bars closing, shows that people are finding better things to do with their time.

Piano is still there if one wants a late one without paying into a club.

    "better things to do"??

There's not many things better to be doing than socialising with a few drinks in the company of friends.
