Can the chairperson of BOM be a member of the selection board in interviewing candidates for Principal post in a community school. To add to the issue he was a previous Principal in the school although gone from that role over the last three years. He will also be interviewing a candidate who was his former deputy.

The chairman of a board will always interview for the top position on an organisation!!

However, there does seem to be a conflict of interest here

Having worked with someone in a professional capacity is not counted as a conflict of interest. Otherwise most principals wouldn't be able to participate in recruitment processes where teachers applying for a position had previous experience in the school.

No conflict of interest in this case.

However this chair is far too close to the school community. A former Principal should not be chair of the succeeding BoM. Poor governance though not unlawful. Irrespective of his/her character too many imputations can be made, right or wrong.

Its a difficult one however I don't see how its poor governance if the Principal is joined by maybe 4 others on a selection board and its a proper process.
