Great to see Isles players back for first time for either hurlers or footballers in probably ten years.

There was only one, I think it was a typo , should auto correct to Na Fianna

Two Isles. Mathews started and Keoghan, who I assume is son of his Da who is ref, was on subs.

Something to ask, all the clapping at the game on Sunday. The little boy who lost his life, it's terrible for the family.
However I think some of these Facebook groups are taking this too far and basically looking to influence things or show their influence by taking advantage of sad situations some of which have either no connection to the game or are not incidents like the London bombing where a whole city is being respected.

It's difficult to raise these issues without seeming miserable but not all tragic events require this treatment imo.

Normally I'd fully agree with you but that little lads plight was extremely sad and to see the way such a young person faced death and still kept a smile on his face and a love for life deserved a minutes clapping at the very least.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

It was a terrible situation, and I thought it received lovely moving coverage in the UK.
I just think these situations are exploited by social media groups.

Anyway it's probably not one to talk about here.

Would have to agree, it's all bit gauche

I hadn't a clue what it was about. Assumed it was a player or supporter.

Getting to be a bit ridiculous at this stage. What connection had this to Dublin or Kildare GAA?

    What's next? Someone's granny's anniversary?

Yeah, this kind of thing takes away from the solemnity of the minutes silence that's observed before games, at least in my opinion.

I am glad I am not the only one who feels this way.

I have no problem with current/former players current/former GAA people/supporters, even relatives of GAA people being remembered.

Or at a push big tragic events where a number of people lost thier lives.
(Although this sometimes can get political - minutes silence for the July 2005 tube bombing in London - it was during an Armagh v Tyrone match in croke park not the wisest choice.
I remember a few 'tiocfaidh ar lá's' shouted)

But to have a young lad who died of Cancer all the way over in England was a bit of a jump for me.

It almost cheapens a life rather then honours it.
It turns into a trendy grieving contest.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

The tribute to that chap who was Dublin supporter was appropriate. As are the pre match tributes. Sunday was just surreal. More about boosting some facebook page than anything genuine. Person beside me was clapping and turned to her mate and said: "What's this for?" Trivialises genuine grief.

Neither did I. Only found out now reading this thread. Doesn't that make it all a bit pointless if people don't know what they are clapping for?

Sorry if it's a stupid question - the applause was for the young Sunderland chap that Jermaine Defoe had become close to ?

I think so from what has been posted on here. I have no idea why.

Correct, one of the lads knew about it everyone else was clueless tbh.

I am not being callous. God help his family. But this is reality TV nonsense. The Sunderland tribute meant something because they had a connection there.

I wouldn't have known either only for I had the Radio on at the same time.
I will be honest it annoyed me a bit, took away from the game and made no sense.
Would the young lad have even heard of Croke Park/Dublin and Kildare?

If people feel that strongly about go on social media pages or whatever they have for it.

Would it have happened if Dublin were not playing?
A lot of Dublin fans influenced by the English soccer etc etc

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Aye .. have to say I was a sheep on Sunday

The dual Berkeley and Harris Brothers tribute was a well intentioned display of condolences at the time, I think the elder lads widow was actually in the ground ... as others have said we'd want to be a bit more genuine with future ones than last Sunday

There was another one for Monto who myself and brother once picked up on his way walking to a challenge game against Derry in Lusk! He was with his little girl. Derry never even turned up so it was a practise game and we all got p!ssed and I had to play a junior B championship match the next day. Was even worse that usual :-)

I looked up when there was a special tribute to Kevin Heffernan.
It was ironically v Kildare (O'Byrne Cup Final) in Parnell back in 2013.

    https://www.sportsfile.com/id/713703/

I am not sure I was at it or not.
But I seem to remember there was a real pride in it all.
Probably the fact it was small crowd and it was in Parnell.
    It really meant something.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Hold on a second gormdubhgorm !!!!!
Are you a Billy no Mates with a radio? That guy who goes to the game on his own and uses the information on the radio to look over his shoulder to tell you "Tyrone scored a goal" in an effort to make friends?
    :)

How times have changed .. I remember when you'd have an aul lad with a handheld transistor and the whole stand would be down asking him for the scores of other games !

Even up in the premium ? .. I thought all you lads had yer own personal router ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,952 ✭✭✭✭Stoner

We do. I told you I slum it for the Dubs. Can't be bringing Heffos into the box (premium is a Corolla, a Box is a Mercedes)

The box is for marveling at Kerry a full tilt, or watching Mayo draw games or seperating me from Tyrone/ Jayop style fans.

:D .. ah jaysis Stoner I meant no disrespect calling it the premium .. BIL worked with Dalkia for a time when they had the maintenance contract for the boxes - he tells me on quiet match days those boxes were just a front for some porn film....

It's downright impossible most times, especially in the seats closer to the pitch. Croke Park deliberately block the signal (don't ask me how, I'm not a tech head) close to game time, for the front half of all the Lower stands. This will affect your own personal interweb on your phone/tablet device, as well as the Croke Park wifi. I presume it's to stop people illegally filming games & streaming them live on Skype, or Cric or whatever.
