    Hi,

    Just looking for some advice.

A friends daughter is working in a Dublin hotel. On Saturday evening a customer did a runner leaving a substantial bill behind. The waitresses were made pay the bill by their supervisor.

My friends daughter was told she had to pay ?40 but she had no money, so she handed over her debit card (she is only 20 years old)

Just a point also she is doing work experience for her college course.

Any advice.... as we are fuming... but don't want to go in heavy handed and mess up her work experience.

    Many thanks
    Oliver

This is an illegal practice. Supervisor probably covering her ass.

I wouldn't go and speak to the supervisor, I'd go to the hotel manager and discuss the issue with them as they're probably unaware it even happened.

Agree they shouldn't have to pay but let them deal with it. They're 20 and need to learn to stand up for themselves.

This. The woman is an adult. You have no standing to intervene; neither do her parents.

Her college does, and she should certainly be reporting this to them. If their work placement students are being treated like this, they need to know.

Plus, your friend's daughter should learn a lesson here; when she's in the world of work, she needs to joint a trade union.

She is 20. Let her figure it out for herself, don't interfere or intervene. Even if she wants you to!

If it's work experience , thens she is working for free? She most certainly no responsibility for that customer then. She needs to be confident and speak to the manager about getting her money back.

No she is earning. She has decided to leave it as a lesson learned.

It's not a lesson learned. She at least needs to report it to the college.

It's no wonder that the catering industry is struggling to attract staff if they are still at this, along with the low pay and conditions.

Leaving it is all wrong and she is subjecting future interns to the same regime. She needs to get angry and assert herself to the manager - if she fails to stand up for herself now, she is doomed to being a victim. Would she say nothing if somebody dipped into her coat pocket? Would she leave it as a lesson learned? A better lesson to learn is to protect oneself from bullies.
