Putting in a mix was ok in the first half, although I don't know why he persists with Struijk in midfield, much more comfortable at CB.
But then to take off 2 CBs and Rodrigo and change the whole balance of the team was unfathomable. I'm still trying to figure out WTF I was watching in that second half. Play the U23s or put out a full team, but we shouldn't be embarrassed like that.

Curious as to what the impact on transfers that game will have.

The young lads are clearly a bit further away than it had seemed.
Even some of the backup are a bit back from the squad, Costa is regrettably looking a bit like a waste of money. Still good for some of those knocking on the door to get minutes. Casey has potential and a fen of Shackleton to start a lot more regularly.

I thought Costa showed some neat touches and trickery today. Poveda looked more lightweight, but no ball to work with in second half for either.

Both of them, like a lot of the rest, gave the ball away too often. I don't think Costa offers a huge threat and more often runs into blind alleys. He should be better but seems to have hit a peak about two years ago. It's frustrating to watch.

    Neither shocked or disappointed.
Loose passes, heavy touches, not much offered by others to lads on the ball.

Going by previous games, even when we were comfortably in front or comfortably beaten we still ran, I didn't see us do that at any stage today.

A bit of a training session for the lads me thinks. It was freezing, priority might have been dont get injured sprinting or stretching, if we score playing at a 3rd of our usual happy days other than that bigger goals at stake.

Dont mind being out of the FA Cup and concentrating on the bigger picture..but Crawley FFS!

    Fair play to them!

Out at this stage 8 times out of the last 11 seasons.

Why we need to rest players? It not as though we are in Europe and have matches every 3/4 days. No excuses we were dire as was the standard overall.

Marine remind me of Leeds. 4:0 down but still fighting to get something from the game.

Bigger battles to fight as we saw today and some needed a rest. A full team would have put them to the sword. It was a good chance for some others to shine, but that didn't really happen.

More likely to come 6th or 7th to get European football. Today really doesnt matter a jot in the seasons goals

FA a much easier route. Win five games, even on pens and you're almost certainly in the Europa.

And yeah, same for me, a good performance in the PL is the only think but I wish wee hadn't been so abject in defeat today.

And as per last week's discussion on watching other football after a Leeds defeat I can pretty much guarantee there'll be few of us viewing MOTD this evening.

We can convince ourselves, the cup doesn’t matter and we rested players etc
But, that is an absolute shocking result, Bielsa and players totally got that wrong and should be really embarrassed and angry
Leeds, Leeds are falling apart again...I’ve received a few of those today

If you're talking about the FA Cup runner up getting a EL spot, that route is gone a few years now.

    Save them.

Clubs like ManU, Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea all have to travel to Elland Road. Leeds will revert to the league side, possibly with a much better defence then all of them faced in the first fixtures. You might yet get to remind any fans of those clubs about how they wrote off a Bielsa side...

Doh! I'd not realised that. Just checked and it changed in 2015. Thanks for the info.

I'd thought we had two shots at the Europa place. In that case we may be better out of the FA Cup. I love a good run but we're too inconsistent to win it and the PL is our priority. We should be amongst the least jaded teams come end of season. Might be good for picking up points from the top ten clubs.

I always want to do well in the cups but I think it's just being in lower divisions for years! Some of our best results were Utd, Spurs and even the optimism from last seasons Arsenal game. On people talking about other results in the premiership ruining your weekend I pretty much stopped watching Premiership once Leeds left except for big games. I now haven't a clue about the the Championship but I keep any eye on all premier results! Honestly I'm just enjoying this season if we finish 17th!

Extra-time for Brighton in south Wales. Follow that up with a trip to Manchester on Wednesday and they should be softened up for yet another journey to Elland Road on Saturday. We've also got something to prove so I'm feeling good about the backlash they'll get. Alongside a nice welcome for Ben White of course.

Brighton are a decent team who have had many unlucky draws. One thing they aren't is soft.
They will be looking at Elland Road as an opportunity to put that right.

It's a real sign of the times that the site has not exploded over a team with a lot of followers on this site being dumped out of the Cup by minnows. I remember people referring to Colchester and Sunderland defeats over a decade afterwards. Even 10 and 15 years ago it would have provoked lots of glee. With larger clubs fielding 2nd and 3rd string sides, giant killing really isn't what it used to be...which is kind of a pity.

I think it's probably more a case of nobody expects us to ever make the 4th round of the cup, no matter who we're playing. Even The Athletic has an article on it today.

I just think that we should have set up to play a League 2 Team and got through the tie some way but Bielsa won't compromise the style of play regardless of opposition or personnel.

Even though we play three at the back against 4-4-2 in normal circumstances, there was probably no need yesterday. The team we picked,if set up with KP in midfield and a back 4 of Shack, Struijk, Cooper and Davis should have been enough to win the game.

Without KP and Klich in midfield we had no press, we couldn't turn the ball over in their half and allowed them to play the game on their terms.

    As for the HT substitutions.....................

Big time, I think Bielsa wants Struijk to be able to replace Philips at times but hes just not a midfielder. Maybe with Philips being suspended for Brighton thats what he wanted to try out?

There may be choice of two recognised CBs for that match if Llorente is fit to start so the risk is reduced. I wouldn't be that hard on Struijk , he's only 21 and learning plus he brings height. Not everyone is Ben White!

No I think Struijk is fine at CB, he looked fairly comfortable against spurs at times, I'm just saying hes not as midfielder as much as Bielsa wants him to be.

Fingers crossed Llorente is fit for Brigthon, Ayling back at RB and I'd imagine Alioski LB, Dallas in the middle then

I hope he never compromises. The style that he has spent 40 years and probably hundreds of thousands of hours developing and refining, that has seen an unprecedented transformation as average Championship plodders were turned into the most exciting team in the top flight, that has seen him outstrip the win rate of Don Revie...if he had dumped all of that for a trip to Crawley Town, I'd be far more concerned then the implications of yet another early Cup exit.

As per my post, after a trip to Wales Brighton go to Man City on Wednesday and Leeds on Saturday. That's three lengthy away trips in six days. They will not be fresh. We're hurting after yesterday and I see a positive backlash.

    Leeds 4 Brighton 1.

I will be happy with a point from both Brighton and Southampton.

Four minimum for me. Newcastle suffered after our loss to MU and West Brom put to the sword after our defeat by Leicester. A softened up Brighton will get a pummeling at Elland Road. Less sure about Southampton, we can beat them but a point would suffice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,070 ✭✭✭✭event

Comment was poorly phrased, I meant a downer on performances. Always seems to be a bit of a hangover from these results.

    Ah ok, makes more sense
And just how good Bamford is, and how big the gap is between that forward combination of him, Harrison and Raphinha, and any other permutation or combination.

Big time. Really worried if he goes on a bit of a barren run or gets injured

I think we should be beating Brighton on Saturday, they really arent that good at all, 2 wins all year. Then we go on

    Southampton (6th in league)
    Newcastle (15th in league)
    Leicester (3rd in league)
    Everton (7th in league)
    Palace (14th in league)

I think we get 6-7 points from those 5 (Newcastle and Palace, maybe a draw from other 3). Coupled with the 3 I expect from Brighton that means we'd have 32 points from 23 games

Looking ahead, April is a horrible month. Playing the worst team in the league and by that stage, probably the top 3. Good thing is they should all be still in europe so juggling loads of games

    Sheffield United
    Man City
    Liverpool
    Man U

I think your assessment is good but I'd be more hopeful than 6/7 points from the 15 after Brighton. They're all pretty winnable bar Leicester away which I don't fancy at all.

And I also don't understand the respect for Brighton. They're draw specialists (8 thus far) but only two wins as you say and three points off relegation. Fulham get 4 points from their two games in hand and Brighton are in the bottom three. When they come to Leeds they'll be exhausted and nervous. We score early and I think they'll crumble.

Agree in theory, but we didn't play to the style. We had no high press, we went to the rarely used three at the back against a very limited team. If we had stuck to the back 4 with Phillips in midfield, they might have scored a goal or two but we would have controlled more of the game and would have probably have created some chances.

Why so? He's had muscle injuries but has playedmost fixtures for his clubs over the past five seasons, respectively 37, 27, 28, 23 & 30 games. That's an average of 29 a season and it'd do me. He was superb against Ronaldo and Portugal recently and I'm hoping he'll be our star CB this season.

Bielsa never compromising has also resulted in him not winning much as a manger, he got us out of the doldrums so for that reason i will take the few hammerings we get every now and then.
