Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

At the moment Gudjohnson. Started at Bolton, earned a move to Chelsea and went on to win the league twice

Just as well Pele didn't play in England then, isn't it? I mean, he'd be out of the running in this topic...

The OP wasnt exactly super technical. Even the bloody title should give a solid clue to 90% of people. Fun thread while it lasted.

One player I'm surprised nobody mentioned for German Michael Ballack. He was quality for Chelsea.

He was mentioned a few pages back alright.

I'd still push for Didi over him, just about, close call though. But Didi was a massive part in pushing an only-ok team to win pretty much every honor available except the league.

Bert Trautmann was mentioned too... Sounds like an amazing character, but I just don't know enough about him in footballing terms to say one way or the other.

Jens Lehmann was a mad but great keeper, worthy of a mention for Germany. Part of the invincibles and holds the record for most consecutive clean sheets in the CL.

It's close, but Hamman's mad accent puts him just infront.

Yep, between his voice and Cunningham's eyebrows with independent thought the RTE world Cup panel is always enjoyable,.

Thats because all the best Italian players tended not to play in England.

Not just England nearly all they're greats have remained in Italy for they're whole careers generally at Juventus, Milan and Inter. I think Cannavaro was the only Italian to ever play for Real. They seem to be nearly like English players since they don't like to move abroad.

Yes and lets be honest the standard of the premier league when Giggs was at his best was well behind the standard today and when Bale was playing there . With that you've actually made an argument against him rather than for him.

Not really. Man United, Liverpool and Chelsea we're all challenging for the UCL at that time and even some of the smaller we're doing well in the Uefa cup like Middlesbrough and Fulham. Now they're lucky to get as far as the quarter final.

    Spain - Xabi Alonso
    Turkey - Tugay Kerimoglu
    Greece - Karagounis
    Kenya - Wanyama

    PS: Wales - Bale

Ryan Giggs was one of the elite players when the PL was the equivalent of the Eredivisie is now. When it got better he was still a top player but was crowded out by world elite players. Bale was the best player in the league twice when the league was arguably the best in the world.

For Egypt I'd go with Ahmed Elmohmamady, for South Africa I'd go for Pienaar he was a good little player in his first spell with Everton, for Honduras I'd say Figueroa he was good helping Wigan to stay up over the years, also Kanu for Nigeria and I'd definitely go with Valencia for Equador ,Ryan Nelsen for New Zealand was excellent with Blackburn and I nearly forgot to mention Lauren for Cameroon.

Denmark - saw Molby mentioned but surely Schmeichal?

I thought with his scoring record and being sort of an iconic figure in the 90's that Jurgen Klinsmann would have been in the mix for Germany. Hamann and Ballack are up there but Klinsmann was lethal and was third in the voting for World Player of the Year in 1995 when he left Spurs, ahead of Romario, Stoichkov and Roberto Baggio at the time.

I'd have him in there for some of the same reasons I'd have Juninho over Coutinho. Those were the poster boy players in the years when the PL went properly global

No way it's Yeboah for Ghana, it has to be Michael Essien.

Gilberto Silva for Brazil just ahead of Juninho imo.

Didn't think of him for some reason but makes sense! Juninho is the more romantic pick I guess. If it wasn't for Juninho you probably wouldn't have Coutinho playing in England

England may not be better relative to the other leagues but it's better than where it was in the past due to all players of any quality playing in the top league and not stayng in smaller leagues. All the talent has been squashed into the top 4 or 5 leagues now, that wasn't the case 20 years ago.
