I understand the line up that Wenger put out tonight because they were three nil up going into the home leg and they have a league cup final coming up this weekend.

But it sums up Wenger's demise. No longer a Champions League club, knocked out of the FA Cup by a Championship side and he doesn't have a crop of up and coming youth players to make his next great team.

In short, there's nothing left for Wenger at Arsenal. All his excuses are gone.

The draw is at noon tomorrow our time. BT Sport will show it and it will also be streamed on UEFA's website. Looking forward to it as there's quite a lot of good teams in there. I think Atletico are the one everyone will look to avoid.

As far as Milan go they are the only team I'd actively dread playing. The only CL quality team left in the competition.

I loved when they blamed the English fans for trouble with the Russians a few years ago when the video showed the English all in one area coming under attack.

Fan trouble in Spain, racism in Italy. Hopefully UEFA step in and do something about it

Are you thinking of Livorno by any chance?

I genuinely think its only because they got deserved praise on here & by others for this run but Donati & Doni were hardly hipster gold

I think it's just because he heard about them and their politics only recently and therefore decided they are a hipster choice of teams.

Atalanta have a long-running history of left-leaning politics and all over Italy are at the very least respected because their fans don't take crap from anyone and are also able to set political/club rivalries aside. For example they were the first club and fanbase to send out condolences when Gabriele Sandri was shot in 2007.

If anything they are about as far from a hipster team as you can get.

Sweet, might pop over to the Emirates for that one, have never been. Both fairly reliant to win this comp to qualify for Champions League next season.

Yeah in the first leg lost 4-0. Then won 3-0 in the return leg, with van Persie doing some stupid lob thing when he could have levelled it...

We beat them a year or two before that, 2-0 in the San Siro.

That 2-0 defeat was the end of the last great Milan team as we knew them, the kingpins of modern European football. Where experience had got them by in years previous, age finally caught up with them and a young Arsenal team simply ran the legs off them. It's been sad to see their decline since, excluding the mini revival they had a few seasons later, but even then were never the same

Excellent result for Arsenal against one of Europe's in-form sides. Delighted for Wenger. He's given his side a great platform for the second leg and ruined the evening of his critics into the bargain. Legend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Very good start for Marseille. Gone into a 2-0 lead over Athletic inside 15 minutes. Ocampos with the first and Payet just smashed in a second.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,081 ✭✭✭ollie1

That was a great goal from Payet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,247 ✭✭✭✭Guy:Incognito

One of the officials behind the goal decides to get involved for once and balls up a peno decision.

    That's never a peno.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Can't believe that was given as a penalty. Very harsh. 2-1 now. It's funny I used to think players arguing after a referee's decision has been made was a waste of time. Guess not.

And it's half-time. Very interesting game. Marseille could have been 3-0 or 4-0 in front with the chances they had. Instead it's 2-1 after a gift of a peno. Second half should be good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

    Ocamposssssssssssss.

Payet involved again. He's been great tonight.

Update: Thauvin stretchered off. Hope this isn't another Neymar situation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Full-Time. Marseille win the first leg 3-1. I thought Marseille were by far the better side. Ocampos nearly grabbed a hat-trick but Etxeita cleared off the line. Some big saves from Herrerin to keep Bilbao in it too. Payet was very impressive. They had two big dollops of bad luck though: having a very harsh penalty awarded against them and then losing Thauvin to what looks a bad injury. Good night for Ligue 1 after Tuesday's disappointment as Lyon also won 1-0 away to CSKA Moscow.

Elsewhere Lazio suffered a disappointing result tonight drawing 2-2 with Dynamo Kiev at home.

Gonna give Athletic vs Marseille a watch. The first leg was enjoyable. Marseille lead 3-1 currently. Teams:
Athletic Bilbao XI: Herrerin - De Marcos, Yeray, Etxeita, Lekue - Iturraspe, Etxebarria - Inaki Williams, Mikel Rico, Cordorba - Aduriz.

Marseille XI: Mandanda - Sakai, Rami, Rolando, Amavi - Lopez, Gustavo - Thauvin, Payet, Ocampos - Mitroglou.

Good to see Thauvin back after his injury in the first leg. He made the France squad earlier for the international break. Interested to see how Inaki Williams does in this game. I normally like him but thought he was underwhelming in the previous match.

Update: Peno to Marseille for a foul on Payet. And Payet scores it. Long way back for Bilbao now as it becomes 4-1 on aggregate. It's Premier League ref Anthony Taylor doing this game and who gave the decision. It was a fantastic move leading up to the foul.

1-0 Marseille at half-time. Payet has been very impressive once again. He didn't make Deschamps' squad for the international break but he's making a good case for himself with this showing. This is like the Payet from the Euros two years ago.

Here's the Arsenal vs Milan line-ups for the match at 8:05 tonight:
Arsenal XI: Ospina; Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal; Ramsey, Xhaka; Mkhitaryan, Wilshere, Ozil; Welbeck.

AC Milan XI: Donnarumma; Borini, Bonucci, Romagnoli, Rodriguez; Suso, Kessie, Montolivo, Calhanoglu; Cutrone, Andre Silva.

Pleased to see Andre Silva get a run out after his stoppage time winner against Genoa.

2-0 Marseille. Lovely finish from Ocampos cutting in from the left with a low shot past the keeper. Should put the tie to bed now. 5-1 Marseille on aggregate.

Update: 2-1 now. Inaki Williams gets on the scoresheet. Just over fifteen minutes remaining. Poor defending from Rami. Williams is lucky to be on the pitch after a nasty stamp on Amavi earlier. Didn't even get a card for it.

Red card: Top goalscorer in the Europa League Aduriz is given a second yellow by Anthony Taylor. Poor end to his campaign.

Full-Time: Marseille win 2-1 and 5-2 on aggregate. Very impressive display from Marseille. They bossed both legs. The Bilbao fans were waving the white flags at the end.

Payet and Ocampos were very good. Goes to show the strength of the French and Argentinian talent pools respectively when they can contemplate leaving those guys at home for the World Cup. Marseille will be a tricky enough opponent for whoever they get in the draw.

I see Lazio and Leipzig have advanced. Pleased to hear that. Viktoria Plzen surprisingly have levelled things against Sporting Lisbon after being 2-0 down from the first leg. It's gone to Extra-Time.

Hell of a strike in fairness though, and bounced at just the wrong time for the keeper.

And now a peno to Arsenal. Very harsh on Milan that. Not a peno for me.

    And Welbeck scores.
