I mean, normally yes, if it was any other German and Austrian team, but in this case they're both one organization. One entity, with their finances coming from the same source. With Leipzig having the better chance of going all the way, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the equivalent of Formula-1's "team orders" taking place.

It's wrong allowing anyone to have a controlling interest in two football clubs that can meet each other. I wouldn't even allow for people or groups to have any kind of interest in more than one football club. I'd like to think though that pride will go above any corruption.

Yeah, really surprised both were allowed to compete in the same competition to be honest.

I understand that RB Leipzig isn't owned by Red Bull, over 50% is owned by individuals who are employees of Red Bull. This was done in order to circumvent rules regarding the ownership of clubs in Germany. At a guess, as Salzburg and Leipzig aren't technically owned by the same entity, this might allow them both compete in Europe, but I'm open to correction here.

Under Uefa regulations, two teams with the same ownership can't play in the same competition - Watford and Udinese for example.

Yep, there is this rule in Germany, 50+1 which makes it look like RB Leipzig isnt owned by RB.

But Salzburg has been a feeder club for Leipzig for a while already.

I didn't know they had become a feeder club. That's one of the reasons why I think any level of interest in one club should bar you from concurrently having any level of interest in another. I know there are ways around it, as Red Bull have shown, but it's still a massive conflict of interest in my opinion.

Feeder club.... well, they do pay for the players they take\get from Salzburg.
Keita was bought for 15 million for example.

If you go through their squad, there are good few who have history at Salzburg

Should be a good draw. Hope Lazio get Arsenal or so.

    Europa League Draw:

    Leipzig (GER) v Marseille (FRA)
Arsenal (ENG) v CSKA Moskva (RUS)
Atlético (ESP) v Sporting CP (POR)
    Lazio (ITA) v Salzburg (AUT)

    Full Draw:

    RB Leipzig vs Marseille
    Arsenal vs CSKA Moscow
    Atletico Madrid vs Sporting Lisbon
    Lazio vs Salzburg

So the English club goes to Russia.

Quite the unnerving tie for Arsenal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Aside from the political noise which will be a pain for Arsenal, I think that's a decent draw for them. Main thing was avoiding Atletico. I would worry for Arsenal fans going over there though in the current climate. Wouldn't shock me if Arsensal advise fans to stay home.

Leipzig vs Marseille could be a cracking tie. I could see that one being pretty close. I'll predict the final four as:

    Marseille
    Arsenal
    Atletico
    Lazio

Gonna give Leipzig vs Marseille a watch. I'm also gonna change my previous prediction following the draw from a Marseille win to a Leipzig win. Marseille are missing top scorer Thauvin, first choice keeper Mandanda, and first choice centre-backs Rolando and Rami to injury. 18 year old Boubacar Kamara, and Luiz Gustavo who usually plays as a DM, will be the centre-backs tonight. I fear Marseille could be in for a hiding. Teams:
Leipzig XI: Gulacsi; Laimer, Konate, Upamecano, Klostermann; Forsberg, Keita, Demme, Bruma; Werner, Augustin.

Marseille XI: Pele; Sakai, Kamara, Gustavo, Amavi; Anguissa, Sanson; Sarr, Payet, Ocampos; Mitroglou.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Werner makes it 1-0 Leipzig just before half-time. Pele poor at dealing with the shot.

And that was the last action of the half. Been an entertaining game. Marseille actually acquitted themselves well, much better than I was expecting. Sarr had an effort that hit the crossbar. Sanson has looked good going forward while Forsberg has done well for the home side.

    Other half-time scores:

    Arsenal 4-1 CSKA Moscow
    Atletico Madrid 2-0 Sporting Lisbon
    Lazio 1-1 Red Bull Salzburg

Hell of a match at the Emirates by the sounds of it. Pleased to hear Lacazette is back scoring.

From CSKA's prehistoric back 3 to Coates & Mathieu for Lisbon its not been a proud night for defending.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Full-Time and Leipzig win 1-0. Leipzig not at their best but got the goal they needed. Marseille were better than I thought given their depleted team. Second leg at the Stade Velodrome should have a cracking atmosphere and Thauvin may well be back for that. I think the lack of an away goal could be a killer for Marseille though.

    Other results tonight:

    Arsenal 4-1 CSKA Moscow
    Atletico Madrid 2-0 Sporting Lisbon
    Lazio 4-2 Red Bull Salzburg

All of the away sides have a deficit to overturn.

Team news for tonight's second legs where all the home sides have deficits to overturn.
CSKA Moscow XI: Akinfeev; A. Berezutski, Ignasevich, V. Berezutski, Nabakin; Bistrovich, Kuchaev, Dzagoev, Golovin; Musa, Chalov.

Arsenal XI: Cech; Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal; Wilshere, Elneny, Ramsey; Ozil, Lacazette, Welbeck.
Red Bull Salzburg XI: Walke; Lainer, Caleta-Car, Ramalho, Ulmer; Haidara, Yabo, Schlager, Berisha; Hwang, Dabbur.

Lazio XI: Strakosha; De Vrij, Luis Felipe, Radu; Basta, Parolo, Milinkovic-Savic, Lucas Leiva, Lulic; Luis Alberto, Immobile.
Marseille XI: Pele; Sakai, Kamara, Luiz Gustavo, Amavi; Lopez, Sanson; Sarr, Payet, Thauvin; Mitroglou.

RB Leipzig XI: Gulacsi; Ilsanker, Konate, Upamecano, Klostermann; Kampl, Demme, Keita, Bruma; Augustin, Sabitzer.
Sporting Lisbon XI: Rui Patricio; Andre Pinto, Mathieu, Coates, Ristovski; Gelson Martins, Bruno Fernandes, Battaglia, Acuna; Bryan Ruiz; Montero

Atletico Madrid XI: Oblak; Juanfran, Savic, Godin, Lucas; Vitolo, Saul, Gabi, Koke; Costa, Griezmann.

Gonna give Marseille vs Leipzig a watch with that game having the smallest lead to overcome (0-1). Surprised that Leipzig have Werner and Forsberg on the bench.

Bruma scores for Leipzig after 72 seconds! Horror start for Marseille.

Mitroglou equalises for Marseille! Marseille still need two. Great start to this game.

Edit: May have been an O.G. from Ilsanker looking at the replay.

2-1 Marseille! 3 goals in the first 9 minutes! Sarr scores after Gulacsi makes some good stops.

What a f*cking pass from Payet in the build to this goal.

    PAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

    WHAT. A. F*CKING. GOAL!

Update: Ref's disallowed it! Mitroglou deemed to have fouled Ilsanker off the ball.

Update II: Goalscorer Sarr looks like he's dislocated his shoulder and weirdly there wasn't anyone around him when he pulled up with the issue. The Marseille staff tried to pop it back into place but he's had to go off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

    THAUVINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

Marseille lead the tie! Payet with the assist.

Half-Time: Marseille go in at the break 3-1 in front (3-2 on aggregate). Great half of action. Worth checking highlights of this later if you're not watching. Payet has stepped up with some great moments in this game. Marseille feeding off the fans in the Velodrome and Leipzig look a bit rattled. I expect to see Werner soon.

    Other half-time scores:

    CSKA 1-0 Arsenal (Agg 2-4)
Red Bull Salzburg 0-0 Lazio (Agg 2-4)
Sporting Lisbon 1-0 Atletico Madrid (Agg 1-2)

Second half under way and Gulacsi has kept Marseille from getting a fourth with two big saves.

And minutes later, Mitroglou has a great chance but pulls the shot wide. Marseille may regret these misses.

    AUGUSTINNNNNNNNN

Leipzig level in the tie but now lead on away goals. Former PSG man has left Marseille to think about those missed Mitroglou chances. Keita with the assist.

    PAYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

They're not taking that one away!

Another moment of magic from him. Marseille lead the tie now!

    SAKAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Goalkeeper went forward and got caught out! Marseille going through!

    What a match.

Full-Time! Marseille have won it 5-2 on the night (5-3 on aggregate).

MOTM performance from Payet who was magical. Best game of his season I would say and brought back memories of his Euro 2016 form. Young players Bouba Kamara and Maxime Lopez were immense.

That might be the best game I've seen all season.

Must be a while since Atletico, Real & Barca all lost on the same match week. Humiliating collapse from Lazio 5-2 up & lose it 6-5 conceding 3 in 5 minutes.

I wouldn't rule out Arsenal anyway, should be a good game.
