Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Cant believe i am the first one mentioning this.... but i did a search on "Berizzo".

As it turns out now, Sevilla's come back was in no small part due to Berizzo telling his players during HT that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Seen this the other day and LOL'd.

    http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11835/11138868/real-madrids-dani-carvajal-facing-two-game-uefa-ban
Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal is facing an additional two-match Champions League ban for "receiving a yellow card on purpose" in the 6-0 win at APOEL. Should the ban be implemented - in Carvajal missing both legs of Madrid's final-16 clash.

I think it was Madrid a few years back, then managed by Mourinho, that done a similar thing, where Ramos and Kross (iirc) both picked up yellows for time wasting, served a 1 game ban in a dead rubber and were clear for the rest of the tournament.

Was this one where Real started doing it.
Or maybe not started it but stopped trying to hide it:

    Decent looking Ajax team there.

Might have been one of Jol's last matches in charge there.
And the start of Cruijff's so called "velvet revolution" that has been anything but "velvetty"
And certainly after Frank De Boer left, just a financial succes.

Seems that Berizzo story about telling the players at half-time is not true.

According to BBC, the club told them it was not true and Jesus Navas has said the players knew about it since Sunday.

It all sounded very inspirational and Hollywood but as soon as I heard it, I had my doubts.

Manolas missed the first leg of the World Cup playoff for Greece as he was looking to be intentionally booked in the group stage of the qualifying so he could avoid a potential ban for the play offs. Fifa banned him for the first leg anyway.

David Beckham did it for England, and admitted it in an interview, but didn't get any punishment.

Got it from a Dutch newspaper who got it from a (former) Dutch coach (Aad de Mos), who as a coach was a bit of a spoofer as well but still had a pretty decent carreer. So not too surprised

Doesn't look to be much on the line in tonight's games. Most of the groups look pretty much done and dusted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

    Bayern lead PSG 1-0. Lewandowski.

Update: 2-0 to Bayern. Tolisso with a good header. PSG almost made it 1-1 after Neymar had been played in by Mbappe but he shot wide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

United 1-0 down. Looked offside to me.

Edit: I didn't see Blind off the pitch. TV3 saying that means it wasn't offside. I'm not sure on the rule tbh so I'll take their word for it.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,694 Mod ✭✭✭✭dfx-

Either Roma or more likely Atletico are going out, but that would need some turnaround against Roma

Do eir/bt sports not stream all the games in hd?

Quality of stream for Bayern PSG is poor.

Gerrard & Scholes must have the two most depressing voices in the history of tv they both sound like they need to talk with the Samaritans.

BT Sport saying the opposite... He was onside!

Rule is if the defender goes off the pitch deliberately.

If they slide off and unable to get back on the pitch in time, it's offside.

Ref is going with Blind kept him onside and given it as Dzagoev's goal

    No idea how

"A defending player who leaves the field of play without the referee’s permission shall be considered to be on the goal line or touchline for the purposes of offside until the next stoppage in play or until the defending team has played the ball towards the halfway line and it is outside their penalty area. If the player left the field of play deliberately, the player must be cautioned when the ball is next out of play." p.95 https://football-technology.fifa.com/media/1245/lotg_17_18_en.pdf

Doesn't seem to mention purpose when it comes to deciding offside.

Mbappe makes it 2-1 with a header. Lovely move from PSG. Verratti and Cavani did well in the build.

It isn't... Nothing in the rules about sliding off.

Two of the top five goalies in the world going head to head at the Bridge and people talking about a offside goal

I'm paraphrasing what they're saying on BT at the moment.

    Currently googling FIFA/UEFA rules

There is some inconsistency though as it's given as Vitinho's goal (the kicker) rather than Dzagoev who it hits off

Roma 1-0 up, Atletico also score and Barca as well just now.

    edit: Anderlecht also scored.

    Lukaku makes it 1-1.

    And Rashford for 2-1!

    Another assist for Pogba

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Tolisso makes it 3-1 Bayern. Coman left Dani Alves for dead with the assist.

Atletico are like a dog who lost his teeth. Look uncharacteristically poor defensively at times this season.

Full-Time. Bayern win 3-1 but PSG still top the group. An entertaining game.

Some big teams in the unseeded pot next round:
    Basel
    Bayern Munich
    Chelsea
    Juventus
    Real Madrid

Possibly joined by Sevilla, Napoli and Porto tomorrow.

We can only draw Besiktas, PSG or Barcelona as it stands.

unless Liverpool lose top spot (unlikely).

    :o

Bayern somewhat redeemed themselves, but I'd still question their ability to turn over someone like PSG in a knock out tie. Having said that Heynckes definitely got them back on track. Kingsley Coman has been a revelation, Ribery played very well and even Mueller looked sharp again. Not to mention the two time goal scorer.

PSG have arrived at the big time I think. Looks like the arrival of Neymar and Mbappe transformed them from a 'big money but not quite there yet' team to serious contenders. An 'old fox' team like Real will still do them but they're getting there...

Are Basel a big team now? Many will be hoping for them in the draw.

Great to see so many top names finish 2nd.....will really make for some interesting ties in the next round.

The way this season's CL has gone, I don't think it makes much difference if you finish 1st or 2nd, likely to get a tough enough draw either way.

UEFA having draws for every round annoys me. Once you get to the quarters teams should just he given the route to the final but no there won't be a meet up & trying to justify the roles of ambassadors, etc.
