It's a gorgeous looking Zelda clone by Ancient with music by Yuzo Koshiro. It was a pretty big release.

Kind of looks better than it plays though.

I loved SOT so much. Probably the first time I was really immersed by a game. I always wanted a SNES because of Zelda and Secret of Mana but the shyster in the local kettle's n' toasters shack convinced my parents to buy one of the dusty MegaDrives he conveniently had in stock (he told them SNES' were nothing but trouble and would need to be sent to Japan to get fixed). I still loved the MegaDrive (even though my first game was Altered Beast - yuck!) but SOT blew my mind. My SNES-owning, RPG-loving cousins even swapped consoles with me so they could play it.

Landstalker was much better imo, isometric platforming aside

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,532 ✭✭✭jooksavage

I'd completely forgotten about Landstalker! I always wanted it as a kid but never saw it selling anywhere. Defo going to hunt it down now!

I played landstalker recently and despite some troubles with the perspective because stuff didn't have shadows it's a real gem.

I'm going to kill Golden Axe, mainly because Streets of Rage was a much more fun series. Hafta say though, struggling deeply with what's left :-/

Ty, Golden Axe was clunky feeling compared to SoR.

SOR was better. Golden Axe was great though. Pretty weird too - the jarring bubblegum pop music over the end credits, which if i recall correctly, are being batted onto the screen by one of the baddies. I almost expected Death Adder to come back on to do the can can.

Gonna kill the Strike series. I was never a fan of them. Found the games obtuse throughout

Ok, I'm going to say it: I actually hated MM2. I wasn't very good at it and playing against 3 semi-competent friends was a miserable experience. We used to do little SF2 leagues (which I'd win at least quarter of the time) until this came out. Then it was all about the Micro Machines.

Comix Zone. Got to the last boss. Never finished it. Any game where you have one life can go **** itself.

re-released for free on Sega Forever last week.
I wonder how many people will stick with that after 5 tries and dying straight away.

    Where is my checkpoint ?
    How do I save ?

Seeing as you insist. Flashback is gone. Graphically stunning at the time game but had horrible gameplay. I never understood how people thought it was great.

God damn it. For me it's the second best game on the mega drive. It's one of the best games Konami ever made with some very clever level design and incredible bosses. Then there's the soundtrack by the woman that went on to compose the soundtrack to symphony of the night. It did stand out from the crowd. The rocket pack was a unique gameplay feature and each stage offered some new twist on it. It played more like a contra game than a sonic or Mario clone and was made by the contra team

I'm so upset I could cry.
    Maniacs 😢

An excellent basketball game yet it's a basketball game so has a very obvious ceiling. It shouldn't be in a sniff of any top lists.

Midnight Resistance is gone. Great game and Hitoshi Sakimotos rendition of the soundtrack is even better than the arcades but I think mega turrican and probotector are better representations of the genre.

Think this is tougher than any other system because they're mostly games I don't care about. I don't think the Megadrive's library has aged as well as the SNES'.

That said..... Strider goes. Decent arcade port but a limited game that was designed for the arcades and could be finished in no time.

Also, the box art for the Megadrive port is famously abysmal: Strider Hiryu is sporting an executive haircut and dressed like an Olympic gymnast in wellies. Pretty sure the artist never saw any screenshots let alone played the game. Lazy stuff.

Yeah but you have to remember at the time how awesome Gymkata was.

Taking out the revenge of shinobi, purely cause I was terrible at it and the only way i could get through it was by using the cheat for infinite throwing knives and spamming that double jump-fire 8 at once.

Phantasy Star 4 is a good shout for best 16 bit RPG. PS2 was way ahead of it's time storywise but was archaic. PS3 was a bit... rough.

Revenge of Shinobi though... that's inexcusable. Shame on you.

    Anyway:

    Probotector/Contra Hard Corp
    Shining Force (1 + 2)
    Shining in the Darkness
    Streets of Rage (1, 2 and 3)
    Thunderforce 4

Streets of Rage gone. All because the western release of Streets of Rage 3 is a big load of arse. Raising the damage enemies do and take ruined the game.

Also I just want to see people go bananas over it.
