Timing of notice

    Hi,

    Girlfriend and I will be heading to Australia later on this year. I just feel it's the right time to travel and if I don't do it I won't ever. I'm just wondering about the timing of my notice in order to not piss anyone off.

    I'm fairly specialised in one of my companies systems and have received a lot of training for it.

    Its about 5 months until we head and I've been here for nearly 2 years. Do I say now or wait? My boss also has holiday plans near when I plan to head...

    Any advice appreciated.

    You should check your contract on the amount of notice you have to give. If its specialised, you may be required to do a handover with the person tasked with taking over from you so the sooner they know the better.

    What's your notice period?

    If you're very specialised then I'd guess the market for the role you have is quite small and it's generally not a good idea to burn a company you have a good relationship with with a statutory notice period if it gives them little chance to replace you. You could end up back there or dealing with similar people or even receiving a poor 'off the record' reference.

    If I recall as I don't have contract to hand 1 to 2 months.

    Yeah the idea is to keep a good relationship anyway :)

    You should arrange a meeting with your manager and let them know that on x date you'll formally be giving your notice of 1/2 months and that you want to give them a heads up so you can assist with a constructive handover.

    As you're travelling, giving adequate time to find a replacement and not going to a competitor, it should preserve good relations.
