Is additional security necessary in W10?

    Hey folks,
I've always ran additional security in line with Windows, mainly Avira (and then changed to Avast), Malwarebytes and CCleaner.

Are these really necessary with Windows 10 given that it comes with windows defender and you can't disable auto updates?

Would it be much much safer to install these programs again or would they just be a waste of system resources at this stage?

Any feedback would be great :)

Defender is fine, for fine users.
Defender is poor, for poor users.

how safe do you want to be?

IMO It never a waste to be careful, and the performance hit from a good AV program is minimal. Just avoid the bloated offerings. and backup; for the love of god!

having cleaned up after people (including IT professionals) with ransomware infected computers, you cannot be too safe.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I might just throw Avast, MWB and CCLeaner on the new install though. They were completely unobtrusive before so hopefully nothing has changed.

Backup is being taken very seriously too. Bought a crashplan subscription and am using Google Drive now too, also very happy with this announcement about Drive: https://www.theverge.com/2017/6/14/15802200/google-backup-and-sync-app-announced-drive-feature

    :)

When installing Avast choose "Customize" and set it to minimal install. You only need the File, Web and Mail shields.

+1 on that - Avast gets bloaty with all the other crap they've added in.
