Parental leave question

Can't find a clear answer on citizensinfo so hoping to get one here please

I want to take some parental leave but my employer will only sanction a block greater than I need.

If I wanted to return to work midway through a sanctioned block, surely I can't legally be prevented from returning to my role?

Thank you in advance for any helpful responses

Under the Parental Leave Act, an employer is obliged to either allow you to take 18 continuous working weeks of leave, or separate blocks of a minimum of 6 continuous weeks, where the second block of parental leave cannot commence until after a period of 10 weeks have elapsed.

Any other requested arrangement is at the discretion of the employer, and they do not have to agree to it.
