One other thing - it appears that Sky Sports News will be dropping the silly "HQ" it gained at the last rebrand.

So the revamp means nothing to Irish subscribers?

  • Registered Users Posts: 252 ✭✭cupthehand1

Just on the phone to SKY to cancel the sports, and the lady said this new revamp is UK only and that in Ireland nothing changes except the channel names.

Any deal offerred to you to stay or any enticement...

Wonder whats the story with the 3pm matches. Surely there's an irish version of Sky Sports PL that they can put on the 3pm game?

Irish prices will be unveiled on the 15th according to someone on the sky section of this site.

EDIT- sky representative seems to be saying no change for Ireland. Take them all or take none of them. They must be worried about people dropping cricket.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,922 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

If that's to be the case I suspect you've hit the nail on the head. There's little or no market for a cricket channel in Ireland. A lot of people might also be tempted to drop F1 while the races remain on C4 and Eir Sport. And golf is also not a huge subscription driver (no pun intended).

That said, let's hear the arguments as to why, for a large chunk of fans who only want the Premier League, why the entry point of Sky Sports in Ireland should be double the UK entry price.

Indeed. Streaming is a huge issue and I think they seriously need to look at their pricing to combat it.

The best deals arrive when you've completely ended your service. GIve 30 days notice and call Sky the day it's switched off to get it put back on and usually at a 50% discount.

    Not happening in Ireland apparently.

    - Very unfair if this is the case - expect to hear a lot more about this.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,922 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Seemingly even in the U.K. only Sky satellite customers will be allowed avail of the tiered pricing. Not a consolation, of course.

    - Fair enough but then let's be fair and make it also available for Sky satellite customers in ROI.

    From the legal section:

"Main Even Channel is a bonus channel showing live content from the other Sky Sports channels at the same time as it is available on such channels. Only available with the Sky Sports complete pack."

What is the point of this channel if you can watch them on the channel they are on? I don't get it.

I am thinking the same. What exactly is anyone getting out of this channel if it is on another channel they already have?

Yep. It was confirmed by Sky earlier that Sky Sports PL will show 3pm kick offs in Ireland.

A list of the likely changes from the old channel names to the new ones are there below; though it may change. The source is from Digital Spy.

    SKY SPORTS CAPACITY WISE CHANGES

Sky Sports 1 > Sky Sports Main Event
Sky Sports 2 > Sky Sports Cricket
Sky Sports 3 > Sky Sports Action
Sky Sports 4 > Sky Sports Golf
Sky Sports 5 > Sky Sports Premier League (3pm KO's in Ireland will be shown on this channel)
Sky Sports F1 News and Mix unchanged

Not sure which order 3838 and 3841 are yet as the schedules seem to be the same. Looks like just the numbers are being reshuffled.

It could be aimed at pubs or cable operators maybe who don't cover the full range?

You only get the channel if you have the full range though.

That's Sky satellite domestic customers though. Commercial agreements would be different. I'm only speculating myself of course :)

Just to say though that this won't be how it appears to end users. Sky Sports Premier League will be on 402 and appear to have replaced Sky Sports 2. There's a full list of the new EPG positions here:

    401 Sky Sports Main Event
    402 Sky Sports Premier League
    403 Sky Sports Football
    404 Sky Sports Cricket
    405 Sky Sports Golf
    406 Sky Sports F1
    407 Sky Sports Action
    408 Sky Sports Arena
    409 Sky Sports News
    121 Sky Sports Mix

That's paritially the point - there are still some providers (BT Vision) who only carry Sky Sports 1 & 2. These will now only carry Sky Sports Main Event and an additional "Sky Sports Extra" (not the first time they have used this name!) channel that will exist solely to show Premier League games on the occasion that they are not shown on Main Event.

The other point is simply ratings - to ensure that events which will be top rated get a prominent position on the EPG. Its the same mentality that sees prominent golf tournaments on both Sky Sprorts 1&4 lately.

Even noticed it the other day on BBC when Andy Murray was playing at Wimbledon - the coverage was moved from BBC2 to BBC1, with the One Show, etc swapping over to BBC2.

    Apparently for ratings...

Interesting to see what channel they put the 3pm on for us here in Ireland

edit - just noticed that it should be shown on Sky Sports PL

Aimed at the UK really, we'll get it but will be hardly watched

Sky could easily do 2 Cricket channels at certain times of the year. I wonder will they still do a sky darts at certain times of the year dropping action or arena.

A bit of an embarassment for Sky Sports and its new golf channel: they've lost the rights to the USPGA championship. The PGA of America decided not to renew its deal with Sky. It's possible UK & RoI viewers may not get to see the event at all this year.

That's one I didn't see coming. Apparently the PGA want to try 'something different', which sounds to me like web-streaming for a fee no doubt. Could change the way sports are broadcast or else will blow up in their face.

An update on Sky Sports for you Irish viewers

Sky Sports 2 Ireland closed last week so there is no version of the forthcoming Sky Sports Cricket with local Irish ads any more.

In the UK, Sky Sports 3 will become Sky Sports ACtion.  You know the rest of the line-up changes

However, the feed of Sky Sports 3 Ireland will swap to a local version of Sky Sports Arena instead of Sky Sports ACtion from 0600 on Tuesday morning.

So in Ireland you will see local versions of

    Sky Sports Main Event
    Sky Sports Arena
    Sky Sports Golf
    Sky Sports Premier League
    Sky sports News

Just in case anyone is confused, that appears to be the situation.

Hope that is of help to you.

  • Registered Users Posts: 123 ✭✭jimbo2007

Sorry - the local list above should have read

So in Ireland you will see local versions of
    Sky Sports Main Event
    Sky Sports Arena
    Sky Sports Golf
    Sky Sports Premier League
    Sky sports News
    Sky Sports Football

You will get UK versions of

    Sky Sports Cricket
    Sky Sports Action
    Sky Sports F1
    Sky Sports Mix

    Hope that is helpful.

Makes sense that Sky wouldn't be bothered with Irish adverts on the cricket channel, and that they'd be more interested in putting them on the channel that GAA and rugby union will be shown on.

Yep, I'm very sure that channel gets under 10% of the Sky Sports viewership on the whole here in Ireland.

Whats the point in the rebrand when Irish subscribers wont be able to pick what channels they want to watch?

There are a lot of unhappy posts on the Talk To Sky Forum.

Btw What channel will show the Efl Carabao Cup?

It spreads their sport very thinly, always thought there was little on ss at the best of times but now you'll have a lot of channels with a lot of filler a lot of the time. ..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,760 ✭✭✭peejay1986

In addition to the poor deal that Irish customers are getting, the icing on the cake is that it's still SD as standard. In 2017 I find that absolutely laughable.

Even Sky Cinema has been upped to include HD. They just know that many people have no option but to stick with Sky Sports so the basic package can be as measly as they like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,764 ✭✭✭Delta2113

The Women 's Cricket today was on 3 sky sports channels at the same time. Still having to pay more for HD is a disgrace.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,517 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Does anyone know what the point is of keeping the SD channels in the EPG too? Can't they just downscale if you don't have HD package?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 11,922 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

Because the first couple of generations of Sky digibox were SD only and couldn't view HD channels at all. There might still be some out there with those boxes though it's a while since I last came across one.

I really hope they show When Terry Met Kane again. I'd really like to see it for the 10th time.
