Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Never really gave reddit much of a thought, I first heard of it years ago and I kinda heard it was bottom of the barrel internet types on it. I guess that has either changed or it depends on the subreddit you go to...
Like the guy above, I might give it a closer look. I normally use three forums including Boards and often I run out of stuff to read through. The reason I started using boards was because it was more local, back then every other site I was on was American :O

Well there'a a good reason it's the 4th most popular site in America and the 5th in Ireland. Boards.ie is sixteenth here.

For those who are saying that reddit threads are confusing, or who want to read the comments in order: Underneath the title, there's a sort by (new / old / top / controversial /) Not sure if this is only a feature of Desktop & Reddit Enhancement Suite.

I despise the layout of reddit.

    It's basically
    OP
     >One-liner
       >lol
       >good one
       >have my upvote
           >I'm upvoting too
     >One-liner
       >amazing
       >reaction.gif
           >saved
           >upvote
     >Actual discussion of the topic
         >reply
             >reply to reply
         >different reply

    It's so disjointed.

Yeah but to me that seems easier to follow, you just collapse the first two comments and then all that's left is discussion, on Boards it could be

I've read boards for a while and it's seriously repetitive with little to offer in the way of contributions to various subforums.
I don't understand how Reddit works. It's not linear. It's just all over the place and I can't follow it.

You not being able to understand it is you're fault, not Reddit's. Millions can.

Yeah, best of luck trying to see a football gif of a goal in the soccer forum here. Too many stupid rules on boards.

    So, Reddit.

Nothing to do with being cool or not. On Boards there's forums with no posts for years, but there could be 60 new posts a day on the Subreddit. Admittedly, you lose the Irish focus.

    I agree with this.

I prefer the "one tier" reply approach (much like boards). The "nested replies" are unnecessary and I don't even bother reading a reply of a reply of a reply of a... and so on.

just joined Reddit a few hours ago after reading this thread.
I changed it to old but I still hate it
I cant find anything, all the topics are all over the place
there is no rhyme or reason to the replies

I cant see any reason for choosing reedit over boards. except that any off topic discussion goes off into one of those collapsed areas

You have to do exactly the same thing (load more instead of next page) on reddit unless you have RES so I have no idea what your point is there.

You're still not getting it. Dissenting opinions from the norm shouldn't be hidden just because the majority disagrees. How easy it is to click them is not the point.

Reddit vs boards is like foreign electronic first-past-the-post voting vs irish paper Proportional-Representation.

It's a little parochial, slower to wait on, but there's real people involved, everyone gets heard, and the Russian hackerfilth bots have a harder time playing their mindgame ****ehawking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,526 ✭✭✭✭Darkglasses

Reddit isn't really a discussion site at all IMO. You could have a great time on reddit while completely ignoring the comment section on every subreddit. Boards meanwhile is totally about the responses.

I never have to click to load more on reddit, so for me I click more following a boards thread, that's my point.

I do get it, it's a problem on certain reddits, but do I think it ruins my experience on the site or makes it harder to read than Boards? No I don't

Reddit for the 'Leave It The Fuck Alone' mod approach to interfering with discussion.

In contrast, Boards looks like it's being eaten alive from within, by a complex mess of rules-for-rules-sake, needless bureaucracy, and corporatised faffing around with the site, that collectively are taking their toll on the community.

Only started using Reddit a few months back. It's unbelievably vast. There's subs for everything.

Best thing about it is the amount of posters. Because you can filter the best comments, you're always reading informed/funny comments. AskReddit is a great sub too.

Still, Boards definitely has its place.

You almost certainly have RES then.

I don't think it's harder to read either, that obviously was not my point. Reddit stifles discussion in its own way.

As does Boards, in it's own ways. Make a post here where you go against the majority opinion and you'll be swarmed at least 10:1 in posts thankswhoring, then telling and explaining why you are wrong.

More and more I'm feeling the same TBH. The moderate because I have to option. The clue is in the word; moderate. Apply a moderate hand to the tiller, not assume some silly control thing. Times have changed. A lot. It has always been a tendency in a minority, as has been the WTF? to it, but now more than ever people need to chill the hell out and embrace a moderate hands off approach.

To be fair M they're in their own sub forum now and having their now discussions and good luck to them.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I could read reddit forever, the sheer breath and depth to it is great, you get experts in so many topics too. There is a reason it's one of the biggest websites everywhere.

A site like boards is more for community which is different and great too, reddit is more interesting in general.

You can still get to know people on Reddit, when i was in the US I met somebody for dinner from there that I had chatted to online and had a great time. There are a lot of communities there too.

Here it's like you generally get to know what people are like more as you see them comment on lots of different topics, it's more specialised over there.

I'd say I use reddit 10 timers more than boards.

Not really. You are just given a red card so you cant post anymore.
Amd then you get banned from the thread and it is closed.

As for hidden away... i still remember the first immigration thread shunted off to the wilds of the humanities forum.

Mods hadnt a clue what to do with it.
Front page news in every country of europe and what does Irelands biggest forum do., hide it as far away as possible. Out of sight out of mind.

The end result is the same, discussion stifled, intentional or not. A lot of people won't bother very quickly once they get hit with that. Great if you want discussion with the diehards or on political topics, not so good for the ordinary internet user though

The immigration threads stick in my mind, but they were the ones where I gave up posting because I was going against the majority anti-immigrant opinion. I'd get at least 5 replies to every post and after a while it gets wearying

I don't like boards moderation but for a lot of the major subs on Reddit the moderation is probably worse.

I was banned from a default not meant to be politically aligned sub for example for simply saying that Snopes.com isn't a good source, the properly sh-tty thing about it was they deleted the comment where I provided some evidence to the view (but left up the first comment!)*

You get auto-banned from groups of subs if you post in other subs.

Even subs that are generally high quality such as AskHistorians have noticeable issues after you spend a while on them.
Easy example I just found but there is more subtle stuff that happens there that isn't so clear as the cull a lot of posts for not being up to standard.
    http://i.imgur.com/KOYDL5U.png

    * The good thing about Reddit though is that as in the case of that sub, people found new subs when the original one becomes too ridiculous

The difference is the boards post is not hidden away.

You make it sound like it's hidden because of the opinion. It's at the bottom because other stuff was voted higher.

If you want to find dissenting opinion, you sort my controversial. That's usually where the real conversation takes place. At least there, people engage. When I was anti-Hillary here, I was just called a sexist racist bla and those people got thanked to the heavens. Attacking the poster instead of the post was fine once people thought I was pro-Trump.

Anyways, this thread comes up in AH once a year and I always do my best to tell people to try it. But there are too many people who refuse to give it a change because it's ugly.

Fact is boards.ie is the only site that gives me agro whereas Reddit has broadened my world knowledge considerably. My girlfriend is the same and uses it all the time on her phone.

I'm not even sure what brings me back to After Hours. It's one of the most serious places on the internet. Habit I guess. When a celebrity dies, here it's all serious like people knew the person. "RIP" in every post and it's just sad and morose. Reddit turns into a celebration of their lives with videos, trivia, quotes etc.

Get the Reddit app. I tried it for the first time recently and it made hours of waiting time at something I had to attend fly by.

The main newsfeed on it is copied by websites the world over once it hits Reddit. You may as well read it there first.

If this was Reddit this post would probably be top of the thread.

Both have their uses, but Reddit is streets ahead. Come to a topic late on reddit and you can read the best replies. On boards, you come to a topic late and it has about 200 posts you can forget about it unless you have half an hour.
The amount of topics on reddit is unreal. Askreddit every day will leave me in stitches laughing. While boards has it's funny posts, they're few and far between and hard to find.
Boards is still useful, but not in the same league as reddit. You can't even say **** on boards! The moderation on boards is a bit over the top, I wouldn't even notice the mods on reddit.
Also, notifications when someone directly replies to you on reddit is very handy. Some people seem to think debate is dead there, but that notification feature makes it extremely easy imho.

Old, New, Best, Top, Controversial etc. There's many options.

If you sort by "old" you'll read a Reddit thread in chronological order.
