Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

how do you find these sub reddits

    Here you go https://www.reddit.com/subreddits/

There's probably thousands of them and if you cant find a topic you're looking for (unlikely) you can create your own subreddit.

Some of the subreddits even have subreddits of their own that still have great numbers and traffic. think of them as worthy spinoffs to your favourite TV show.

Honestly you'll just see them quoted in comments mostly. It's how I found some of the weirder, obscure ones that I didn't even think I would like.

Google is a good start. "Kayaking subreddit" etc. Also check the side-bar of your favourite subs where they will most likely list like-minded subs.

Your ignorance over the last few posts shows you up more than you're trying so hard to do regarding Reddit.

You come across, rather bizarrely, bitter about it.

It's been highlighted numerous times you can change the layout. Then you resort to 'probably 14 year old Americans'. Pathetic.

Reddit has a worldwide user base ranging all ages and backgrounds. You find quite a lot more insight from range of topics.

Out of all your reasons to not like it, this was the worst!
how do you find these sub reddits

Takes a bit of using to get some good subscriptions. You get some default subscriptions, unsubscribe from ones you have zero interest in. Then just search for some subjects you like. You pick up others along the way. You can always go to r/all to see an overview of everything. If you see an intersting sub, subscribe. Most subs have a list of related subs along the bar on the right. You can get good recommendations there.
Here's my subs beginning with A:
    4chan
    AbandonedPorn
    AccidentalComedy
    AdamCarolla
    AdviceAnimals
    AlanPartridge
    AmazonTopRated
    amibeingdetained
    Android
    androidapps
    AnimalsBeingBros
    announcements
    ANormalDayInRussia
    ArtefactPorn
    ArtisanVideos
    AshVsEvilDead
    Ask_Politics
    AskHistorians
    AskReddit
    askscience
    AskScienceFiction
    asoiaf
    assholedesign
    ATBGE
    AtomicPorn
    aviation
    awwschwitz

Some interesting, some stupid. But entertaining. I edited out the NSFW ones

Everyone does. So do you, a simple click on your post history to see what boards you post on reveals that. Fair enough if you can't figure out reddit, but saying you have no interests is ridiculous!

reddit and many other forums are more lax to discuss broader topics, here mention some legal issue > mod warning cant give legal advise, or cant discuss such topics etc. From one side its good to prevent 0.01% of darwins out there doing smth stupid, but otherwise you have large majority who cant discuss most topics thus places like reddit flourish, since it gives more broad topics to discuss not generic ones that repeat every 1-3 months say on AH.Then you have larger numbers on any subject where on boards many sub forums are basically dead with few members,so thats useless if you want any answers thus its hard competition.

I don't understand how Reddit works. It's not linear. It's just all over the place and I can't follow it.

This. My first and only visit to the site was last month when there was a thread on this forum about it. Couldn't understand the layout of it for the life of me.

Same here. The few times I attempted to contribute, Reddit felt very disconnected. The format is completely foreign. Reddit seems a place one goes to perform... while Boards is a place to engage.

Reddit is great for the sheer volume of users so you always get an answer to a question there - but usually you need to create a new thread for it, if you post something in a thread it usually gets lost in there and never responded to - unlike boards where it will be answered inside of a thread.
    For me anyway! :)

So both have their ups and downs.

The last three pages here are just hilarious incompetence. We need more of this nonsense on boards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,694 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

Never really tried to use Reddit. It did look confusing the few times I opened links to it, but I suppose that if I spent a few hours on it that would all sort itself out.

But not bothered enough about it to do that. There's a huge number of other fora on boards that are probably full of good stuff too, but I'm not bothered to check that out either.

I'm purely here for the talking shyte with anonymous fellow wafflers.

I wonder is it just people who got used to the BB forum style and can't adapt. Because Reddit ranks higher than Boards in Ireland stats on alexa

Definitely a case of older people just not getting it or really trying too.

I bet the average 20 and 25 year old Irish person couldn't give two fúcks about Boards but uses Reddit daily.

I'd say so, for better or worse. It's strange how you never see any of the common irish memes from reddit and facebook here on boards, the place is really out of touch :pac:

I think it's fair to say that some people simply prefer one over the other, based either on content, format, or both. Nothing wrong in either case so far as I'm concerned.

Nothing wrong at all of course, but it is interesting to probe the demographics

Agreed. My post was in response to some of the more heated bickering and name-calling in the thread, as if somehow something really important was at stake. I agree that the question and the answers are intellectually interesting.

But that's AH for you ...

There are good things about both. For niche interests I find reddit better, there's a far bigger userbase so you're more likely to end up talking to people who actually like and know about the topic rather than people who just saw it on the front page and clicked through. I'm very interested in film with a specialty in horror, and I like that I have r/movies (blockbustery, very casual conversation, not particularly moderated) r/truefilm (fairly in-depth conversation, world cinema, silent film etc, strictly moderated to keep the standard of discussion at a certain level) and r/flicks (split the difference) as well as r/horror.

There's an almost site-wide snippiness to boards as well tbh, apart from the moderation it's the one thing you see referenced about the site consistently. Think I read a characterisation somewhere that if someone posted a thread saying "I've fallen off a cliff, please help" nearly all the replies would be along the lines of "God I hate people who walk near cliffs" "You probably fell off it because you weren't careful enough" "What about the poor emergency services people who'll have to help you" "I hate Sinn Fein". There's the odd flash of hilarity on here but generally I find reddit far more craic.

For Irish focused discussion I find boards far better, reddit definitely skews American and there isn't anywhere like boards if you have like a legal question, you're looking for a good restaurant in Cork or a good hotel in Portlaoise or whatever.

The layout is massively off-putting on reddit in fairness but apart from that and the point above, boards is miles behind.

I like reddit for more or less the same reasons outlined so far, but does anyone else think that it's gotten increasingly toxic and hateful lately? No matter what the topic is, you don't have to scroll to far before it dissolves into insults and blatant trolling.

It's been noticeably worse since the US election imo. If you don't filter a dozen or so subs from r/all, it won't be too long before you're totally overrun by ****e from subs like r/The_Donald & r/EnoughTrumpSpam (which, despite the name, is the source of most of the fukin Trump spam). Lately it's been spilling over into the mainstream subs, making it harder to avoid.

Idk, it's summer, maybe all the edgy teenagers are bored...

I have really embraced Reddit now. Haven't really encountered any strange individuals on there so far compared to Boards. Women have left Boards in droves which is an issue that they have been sticking their head in the sand about. While I will be sad to see Boards go, I feel the site's demise is inevitable due to their own self-sabotaging behaviour.

Eugh, r/Ireland put up a Union Jack to commemorate The Twelfth. I know they like to bitch about Boards a lot but at least Boards never did anything like that.

For the record I'm not against the idea of marking the 12th, but something more appropriate could have been put up

You can't have a proper personal argument about something you haven't a breeze about on reddit.

You know, the ones you see all the time where they obviously have the Wikipedia page open in another window, and then the other guy ups the stakes by inventing a relative who is dying because of whatever they're discussing.

And then they both do chippy sorrynotsorry sign offs, but they're both trying to get the last word in so it goes on for ages.

You can't find entertainment like that on Reddit..

Reddit - I can say a certain music event organisation company is **** on there without getting into trouble.

Boards - good for Irish topics etc.
