    Hi.

Looking to buy new tyres for the beater and want a pair of decent not too expensive tyres for city cycling so something that can stand up to put holes, grates, glass etc.

700c wheels and preferably 28c or 30c width.

    Anyone have any recommendations?

I haven't found better, and a great price too. I covered somewhere in the region of 8,000km on my Marathon Plus so far and I haven't had a single puncture. And that was commuting through Dublin City for a lot of that mileage. Yes they are a bit heavy, but I never had issue with that, and the grip was good. They might be a tad expensive when compared to other options, but my god it is worth it not to have to worry about punctures.

I actually don't like marathons, they just feel very sluggish on longer spins for me.
I'd usually only be doing little spins to the shop/work/into town on the bike so they'd be fine for that but I like to take it for the odd quick 20-30km spin and leave the good bike at home and marathons just feel horrible after a while.

They're perfect for what they're designed for though.

I was thinking more like a normal road tyre that have puncture protection and costs like max 40 for a pair.

€40 wont get you a good pair tbh. The decent ones are all up at 60-70.

    Personal favourite:

Specialized distrib who supplied them closed down but you can still get them from NI (CRC/Wig). Really they cannot be beat. I've had the entire rubber layer come off and still keep rolling on the "armour" bit.

These came up a while ago in the BA thread.

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/lifeline-prime-armour-road-tyre/ - Look like a gatorskin copy.

http://www.wiggle.com/lifeline-essential-commuter-road-tire/ - And These are more like a Marathon

Don't have either so cant comment.

If you could accomodate Vittoria Voyager Hypers I'd get them from Planet X. Though skittish in the wet.

The higher than average lifespan makes them really good value, even without the freakishly good puncture protection.

I never had a puncture on mine either.
As a general guide, you can expect a tire mileage of 2000 to 5000 km from Schwalbe standard tires. The tires of the Marathon family usually last between 6000 and 12000 km. With the light Marathon Racer and Marathon Supreme, the performance is a little lower (approx. 5000 to 9000 km). The Marathon Plus is outstanding with its extremely high mileage of often much more than 10000 km.

I think someone mentioned the supremes recently, might be more like regular road bike tyres. Check the german sites, got my last set far cheaper on one.

Schwalbe Durano's have good puncture resistance and are reasonably priced.

I have about 800km on a set with zero punctures, they still look like brand new, no cuts or nicks either.

Or Durano Plus - got 13,000 out of a rear tyre before the first puncture. Front still going strong with about 15,000kms on it.

I've the Lifeline prime armour tyres on my bike. Pretty satisfied with them, great value at 16e a pop. I posted a review on them which is the latest one you see on the website.

For €23.60 + delivery they're worth the risk. Going to get the road verstion of the essential as the slightly more expensive version is out of stock.
