I don't know why I never noticed it before, but on my other PC, the resolution is set to "1680x1050 (recommended)". 1920x1680 is an option, but things get a bit blurry if I choose that resolution. The gfx card is pretty new so should be able to handle the higher res, and the monitor is connected via HDMI.

So the only option left is the monitor, I think. It's a HP w2207h which hp.com also lists 1680x1050 as the factory default, but I don't know if this is just because this monitor preceded proper 1080p resolution. If I go out and buy a new monitor, am I likely to get the 1920x1680 I need?

Secondly, the gfx card has HDMI, DVI and DisplayPort options, should I be looking at something other than a HDMI connection for my new monitor?

Its a Vista era monitor. Aka a potato. Get a new one and you'll be much better off.

1920x1080 is 1080p, if the monitor can only push 1680x1060 (or whatever the res is), its basically going to look crap at anything else.

If you want to get 1080p you'll need a new monitor. If you're not fussy and just want to play games, play at 1680x1060
