Anyone any recent experience of cycling in this neck of the woods? Any decent routes on quieter roads? how are the roads / drivers? Any recommendations on bike hire companies?

All I can find is here:

Doesn't bode well. I was there once before about 15 years ago, would like to head up to Sintra or perhaps go further onto the National Park.

Can't give you any advice about cycling around Lisbon but do cycle in the Algarve every year - in my experience if you avoid the busy roads the Portuguese drivers are fine and the road surface at least as good as here!

I'm just back from Cascais - I didn't do any cycling but they do have a cycle track that runs along the coast there. It's between Cascais and Guincho, not sure if it extends out to Estoril. but it's relatively new and in good condition.

    Some info about it here...

Cycled from Lisbon to Santiago recently so not really around your area as Lisbon airport is north of city. Have a friend who was in Cascais recently and went out everyday on his bike so I will see if he has any info. I have cycled in Portugal a fair bit and as C3PO says if you stay away from busy roads you should be fine.

Not sure about bike rental but have cycled from airport using my own bike and don't remember it being too bad.

When are you going? I'm heading to Cascais and hoping to take some of the windy roads up to Sintra through the park nearby on a few days.

Will also be cycling to Guincha with the OH if I get my way

Lisbon itself, I wouldn't fancy cycling in. Tuk tuks and taxis changing lanes constantly

I'm flying out Monday, there for 10 days, no plans yet so completely loose. Staying near the casino in cascais. Maybe a boards spin is on the cards?

I'll suss out a few rental places and see what's available.

You're coming home when I'm flying out. I'll probably be at you for advice. I'll be about 1 km from Cascais on the other side (near where it's alll green on the map).

Let me know if you find anything decent. If I can get 2 cycles in over the 2 weeks I'd be delighted.

There are free city bikes too apparently, handy for going to the beach, but you need to be there early to get one and they don't have locks.

This road gully is on the outskirts of Coimbra, a few hundred km north of where you'll be but it does indicate a certain lack of cycle awareness among some Portugese road engineers. The other issue our group encountered was the use of rough cobbles for traffic calming in a lot of smaller towns and villages.
