Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Our Brian gets around doesn't he? I didn't think he was that much into tennis. Close by was some royal or other. Hmm ...

FFS, you'd swear he was playing or something.

All part of a carefully constructed plan to boost his profile in the UK I suspect. Though most Irish people would recognise him I'd imagine very few outside rugby circles across the water would have a clue who he is.

Possibly a freebie or an arranged trip from one of his many sponsors.

Or he could just really like tennis.

He's been a few times in previous years, fair play if he enjoys it

Nearly sure he's been there before and if he can afford it, to get in the fancy box, why not.

    Yeah I agree with that.
Most sports commentators would be able to point him out to the viewers. He may indeed like tennis, who knows. I don't know if he has a manager type person advising him on engagements but a shrewd move indeed.

Bob Geldof, Wogan (I think) became OBEs or Sirs or whatever so I would imagine if he keeps doing his bit he may well be next in line. Nothing to stop him accepting a knighthood and best of luck to him.

    Yeah I think that's a fair point.

This actually made news in the indo.

This used to be a quality paper but has now become a rag that is also obsessed with Amy Huberman.

They are trying to make this couple out to be the darlings of Ireland,, like a royal family that everyone in Ireland is obsessed with when the truth is that nobody gives a sh1te.

Apologies in advance for posting this link

Lots of people enjoy watching tennis. What's the big deal? I'd love to go to Wimbledon. My friend and I toyed with getting in the cancellation line one year but as it's London and as hot as the devil's armpit in summertime, we just couldn't hack it.

Yeah. He was a great I have to say. Does a lot with BT sports. I would almost say he is based in the UK at this stage but of that I am not sure. She is about as average an actress as they come. I never knew he frequented Wimbeldon at all. Still, keeping himself in the British spotlight is no bad thing for his future prospects in the media.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 32,688 ✭✭✭✭ytpe2r5bxkn0c1

Oh catch yourself on OP. Someone known to the public goes to watch the tennis. Big deal. David Beckham was there yesterday. The TV will show known names in the crowd. It's hardly earth shattering, career building, or attention seeking. They just went to watch the tennis.

No,he is not based in the UK and is on Newstalk regularly.

Search the indo and you can read all about their travails in buying a house in Dublin and getting planning permission for an extension.

I doubt that. Both were in the "Royal Box" so I assume one must be invited to watch a match there and no simply go to it.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-4675052/Who-s-Royal-Box-Wimbledon-Championships.html

Always found this aspect of Wimbledon quite annoying as really wouldn't it be much nicer if they gave tickets always to children who can't afford to go, I guess the sport has to keep up it's posh image though.

I very much disagree with that. You would want to be very naieve indeed to think that someone entered the Royal Box just to watch a game of tennis .

He has moved in down the road from my brother, who has never watched a sports game in his life except under duress. Just know that someday they are going to be passing in the street and my brother will be like, hey I know you, you're that guy from the lucozade sport adverts from years ago.

What's your problem with somebody going to a sports event? "Oh, that's not the sport he played! And he probably got free tickets!!!!").

Big, fat, stupid businessmen get free tickets to sporting events all the time. And if they don't, they're perfectly entitled to buy tickets for these sporting events.

I'm not a BOD fan, but I don't see any problem.

Indeed...... his rugby career is over. Unless he's on TV talking rugby or in the paper writing about it no one cares.

Well the BOD fans might..... knobs be knobs etc

Technically, the Irish government, he would have to request permission, unless that protocol has finished.Remember by Anto O'Reilly wanted to take his? Wasn't best please with Fine Gael

Anyway, we won't be calling him Sir Brian, our Constitution says no. Only an honorary Knighthood.

Still, if he is looking for one and gets it via his time as a British Lion, good luck to him. As for Wimbledon, not a terrible way to spend the day

Great player, but a terrible pundit. Himself and luke Fitzgerald are poor. Too close to current players yet to be really honest imo. BOD is kind of painful to listen to.

Huberman is a woeful actress imo, but somehow the media especially the indo think we should all bow down and worship at the altar of bod and Amy. They labelled them our golden couple recently, which is vomit inducing to be honest. But then the celebrity irish thing the indo seem intent on trying to create is laughable anyway. Every z lister is a star according to the indo. It truly is a rag.

BTW the indo ran more or less the same bod and Amy at Wimbledon story every year for the last 2 or 3 years

Shocker - sports legend goes to watch iconic sports event.

Brian is a rugby legend, and would be well known in the U.K. (Also due to his Lions tours) and other rugby-loving countries. Now he's building a career as a commentator (albeit not that great IMO)

I'm also pretty sure he's gone to Wimbledon in previous years.

We don't see the soccer knobs salivating over our footballing hero's (well, bar Eamon Dunphy) the way the Irish media and rugby chaps wet themselves over "BOD" (good god) Still, at least it is not his fault for that.

    Football, darling, football.

Hiliarious, bro, hillarious. Dermot Morgan use to run that joke about rugby during the early 1990's, when Irish soccer team qualified for major tournaments while Ireland regularly were trying to dodge the wooden spoon.

Liam Brady, Johnny Giles (okay, enough from Eamonn) Roy Keane (depending on how you hate United and can't get over Saipan), Paul McGrath, in some circles Packie Bonner, Robbie Keane, Richard Dunne, Ray Houghton, for people of a vintage era Jackie Carrey

In previous years he's attended Wimbledon as a HSBC Sports Ambassador, doing promotional skills sessions and giving talks.

I'd imagine this years no different, with the same added perk that he can bring the wife along for a game on centre court.

Why is this a thread btw?
