Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

During the cold war spies were always on the look out for people who were gay and in the military. They could be blackmailed because obviously if they were in the military they were in the closet.

Not caring about being gay or trans means that these people can't be blackmailed (Well, they could about other stuff but so can anyone).

So that's how america is safer.

It's also about not stopping someone from serving when it makes no difference to their ability.

    So it's a win-win.

Maybe "diverse SOGI" is probably more accurate but not so elegant.

    I demand elegance

Since the biggest ethnic group is Han Chinese you must from now on identify as non - Han Chinese. Or you could just say non Asian.

Hank_Scorpio comments are deplorable to me. I won't even quote his post as I couldn't possibly quote such fanciful nasty nonsense.

What he's suggesting is that ppl of non heterosexual nature are committing suicide for the sole reason that they are not heterosexual, and nothing whatsoever to do with the challenges they face in their lives in society because of simply who they are.

On top of that he also suggests that 'lefties' are somehow encouraging ppl to be something that they are not. Encouraging ppl to question themselves and consequently 'come out' and suggesting that this 'coming out' has somehow contributed to putting them in a place where they become depressed and in some cases commit suicide.

Charlie Bird was on the TV the other day and he recounted a story of man in Co. Cork who came out at the age of 70 years as a result of the GMR. Better late than never I suppose and I highly doubt he was encouraged to be gay by lefties way back in 70's.

When one hears real personal stories like that juxtaposed with the comments of Hank_Scoripo it tells me that their still exists a bitter element in some small sections of heterosexual society for the recognition and rights afforded to ppl of non-heterosexual orientation.

    QUILTBAGPIPE?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Can you you tell me how it doesn't?

When it comes down to it in combat, you really don't care about the sexuality, gender, sexual orientation or skin colour, you just want to know they have your back.

That's not militant sounding enough. We'll never get the world conquered if they can't take the acronym seriously.

Also, I can never remember what the PIPE stands for :-/

Well if the logic of your category is to refer to everyone that is not han chinese then "non-han-chinese" is the obvious name for the category. Perfectly reasonable actually

Just like if you want to refer to everyone who's not white then the obvious choice of name for that category is......oh no wait, it's "people of colour" because oppression and twisted knickers etc. :)

Even though "people of colour" excludes the italians and spanish but includes mexicans :D

    Its a relevant discussion,
But if i called a gay guy a queer id be called a homophobic, but queer is part of their acronym, is that not a bit of a double standard ?

Not really, it depends on the context that you use it in.

Shouting it out of the back of a hiace at a passerby is homophobic, using it in a polite, non-aggressive way is fine.

Its like a girl can say shes fat to her boyfriend while they're on the couch eating popcorn, but a randomer cant scream "fat bitch" through her letterbox at 4am on st paddys day.

I don't see how the T is related to the LGB sexual orientations?

Disregarding the other add-ons which I've never even heard of.

Although I'm neither in an American college nor do I spend my whole life on the internet so that's excusable.

Good point, it's probably easier for these groups to band together under the one rainbow flag as they share similar grievances with society. Rights, recognition, etc.

Seems like the expansion in the acronym came at the same time as the rise in intersectionality and the desperate need for some to indentify themselves to a ridiculous extent. If you identify as a black feminist muslim disabled trans person then you've really hit the jackpot in the intersectional stakes.

Depends on the combat involved. When it comes down to it in infantry type combat, basically you want a very fit man in his twenties, sexuality or skin colour unimportant.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
