Hi someone gave me their TomTom and wanted me to update their maps for them.
Their Maps are 3 years out of date.
I don't have their login details, don't know if the device has been registered, don't know if they ever logged onto the TomTom site, probably not.
Anyway if I just create a TomTom account for myself would I be able to update the Maps on it?
Could that create problems for the actual owner?

Sorry mods I had to duplicate this.
This is a more relevant section for my post.
Can you delete my previous thread from Consumer Electronics -> mobiles.

It costs about 70 euro to buy maps for a TomTom so maybe get the customer to create a new account ? Unless you're feeling generous.

If they already have an account with TomTom then the site will recognise his email address and offer a recover password or reset password option.

There's nothing to stop you setting up your own account, updating the device and giving it back to the owner, it's linked to you and not the specific device so it won't effect the owner should he/she then go online to update the device themselves later.

I think this person wanted their maps updated for free.
I don't think the device has been linked or registered to an account.
I wonder is it possible it could come with the free lifetime maps?
    Its a TomTom XL.
If it doesn't is there some other way of getting free maps?

I had the same unit. Actually just replaced it 2 weeks ago. The battery was knackered and wouldn't hold a charge.

I updated the maps on it last year and it cost about 70 quid from TomTom as far as I can remember. It was the full European model so maybe that's why it was so expensive? You can buy just the Ireland/UK maps cheaper if that's all you need.

There are new firmware updates that make it pick up the satellites much quicker and map corrections that are all free but you gotta pay to update them.

I heard somewhere they had free lifetime maps.
Maybe that's only US then is it?
Like the device hasn't even been registered to an account as far as I can tell.
Oh well I'll have to tell the guy who owns it the bad news.
70 quid I'd say he might as well buy a new SatNav or better yet just use Google Maps it's free.
These SatNavs aren't so appealing anymore me thinks.
