Here's a tip for new shield owners if they plan to use the youtube app a lot like I do.
3 months ago Youtube changed their Android TV app to the one that runs on cobalt framework like on smart tvs and consoles. Basically they've gimped the Android TV version of the youtube app just so they can have all their apps running the same on every device out there. The problem is the new youtube app sucks for a variety of reasons.

This is what the new app looks like.
    youtube-trending.jpg

To get back to the old one you have to go here:
Settings > Apps > YouTube > Uninstall updates

Your youtube app should then look like this which I much prefer:
    tXDITbPnT-Kf5IVbMIPDdg.png

If you prefer the old one and want to keep it you should go into the play store and under settings disable auto-updates for apps so the box doesn't update it to the new crap one again.

The only thing not working in the old app is live streams, but I have only ever wanted to watch one and for that I just chromecasted it from the youtube app on my phone to the shield.

would you recommend this if I already have an xbox one? I am looking to upgrade my android box for kodi and this maybe overkill. I dont think I will use it much for gaming

It's a good upgrade on most cheap as chips Android boxes because it runs the official Android TV and gets continuous support through ongoing updates. Most cheap Chinese Android boxes run a hacked touchscreen tablet version of Android designed to be used with the F fingers, this Android TV is designed for a big screen and a remote.

You should also check out three Xiaomi Mi Box, it runs Android TV also but at much less cost. Be sure to get a USB Ethernet adapter for it though

Started to set mine up last night
Unit updated and controller updated, the remote control is ridiculously perfect the volume and voice control wow, moving around the menu options and using apps like YouTube works a charm
As for kodi, I’m just baffled lol followed a few guides and they didn’t seem to work to set up what I wanted and it was getting late
    Try again this evening
If anyone has any tips and tricks for kodi drop me a pm.

£143.00 for the Remote only model. Thinking I might get that plus a 6 euro Bluetooth controller for minimal emulation / gaming I might play, e.g.

    Dont do it imo

The Nvidia controller and remote are a joy and well worth the extra few quid. Besides the controller acts as a Goggle Home listening device, so even more bang for your buck!

The sheild controller is very good. If the remote and controller one is 159 on Amazon then it’s a no brainier.

if you already have stuff on your local network then plex is the best solution and far better than kodi at this.
Kodi is brilliant for adding streams/channels etc which you want to watch for free.
So if you have local content =plex.
    Stream= kodi.

Can't wait to get mine now.

For anyone thinking of ordering one.

Use a revolut card if you have one and pay in GBP. It saved me about 7 euro.

Also don't forget to get a decent HDMI cable.

After considering the Shield overkill for Kodi use for ages, I succumbed last night and bought from the UK store(€179.95 through Revolut), will be able to compare with Mi box(€51.49 through Revolut) that i had purchase earlier last night :D

I’m on the verge. Have a minix neo U1 - why should I buy this?

I had a Shield a few months ago but returned it because I considered it overkill and too expensive for what I wanted it for. (Kodi, Netflix, Youtube, etc).

In the meantime I bought a Fire TV gen 3 and have a two Mi Boxes in the post. I also bought two cheap Android boxes to play round with (one for LibreELEC and another for a simple always on NAS)

I've had the Shield in the checkout basket several times since it went on sale pondering if I should buy it or not. I don't think I'll make it until the end of the day without buying it.

Luckily earlier today I purchased an AVR with 6 hdmi input ports :pac:

I'm interested in hearing about this. Will be moving in the new year and may need to provide Plex in other rooms, but not keen on paying full whack for another Shield.

Seems a bit pointless to be honest. Might as well buy a cheaper device if you are going to do that.

Let me ask a common question, what are the most used things about the shield. I see Netflix, YouTube, Kodi/Plex and stm emulation. Missing anything?

I use it for the above plus:
    • SPMC - The dev uses SATV as his development box, more functions than Kodi for SATV
    • FileX - a nice file browser
    • Notifications for Android TV - Mirror Notifications from my Phone
    • Ariel Dream - Scrapes Apple's jawdropping slo-mo screensavers
    • My VPN's android TV app - :D
    • Hopwatch - Reddit Pictures
    • VLC - Videos
    • Tunein - Radio
    • Terrarium TV - Google it
    • Vimeo - Like Youtube
    • BBC iPlayer
    • ITV
    • Google Play Music
    • Spotify
    • Twitch
    • RetroX - Emulation with a nice frontend
    • Geforce Now - used it for 3 months. If good Internet, a great way to play top tier games
    • Android games developed or ported to the shield, Like Tomb Raider(1st reboot), Portal, Half Life, Metal gear Solid 2 & 3 etc.
    • Gamestream - Stream from PC to the Box (rustledjimmies's recommendation)

    Just a few i use

I have a fire tv box, second gen firestick and a mi box 4K.

I've ordered a shield to see if it performs any different too be honest.
Main reason to get the shield is to see how it performs with retro games. The other devices I use work very well for the "other" apps.

Has anyone tried PS4 remote play with this? Any lag?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,083 ✭✭✭rustledjimmies

I'd add GameStream to that list too.

"Now you can access your games from your GeForce® GTX-powered PC on your TV at up to 4K HDR."

If you have a PC with an nVidia Graphics card then you can play your PC games on your TV via the Shield. There's an added bonus that the PC software you run doesn't have to be a game - any PC app can run so that might be useful to some. I've yet to bring Excel to my TV :)

Bought it myself last night. Can't wait for Wednesday :) Can anyone recommend good iptv service with real hd channels not a sh**y 480p or less. Also best way to watch iptv on shield?

Could someone please PM me links to 'good' guides to add on all the extras for tv/movies etc

    Thanks very much

For anyone would is willing to invest the time, read up on TVHeadend. There is an app which takes the feed from a TVHeadend server and feeds the LiveChannels app on Android TV.

    http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ie.macinnes.tvheadend

I currently have Freesat & Saorview with full epg, searchable from Google assistant, on my SATV and on a Nexus Player in my parents house and ADT-1 in a friend's house.

This is the ultimate single remote in the living room .
