Haven't seen the race programme but I imagine they are based off the AAI entry lists.

To be honest I have no problem with him running for raheny. But to be a national champion for a country, you should be available to represent that country.

I totally agree,I was tracking Gary today,I was over the moon thinking he was Irish champion.I can't imagine how dissapointed he must be.

    ouch

I was at the UCD flyover, and he seemed well clear in second
GOH was right on Ciobanu's heels, waiting for his moment to pass, but I didn't think he'd catch Scullion

Nice to have something in common with a 2.19 marathon runner! :pac:

Some days it doesn't click. You could of over trained, stressed over something or a bug that's coming on.

We all been there and you come back stronger for it.

Thanks average_runner. This was the first time when I thought 'never again' but I'd hat to finish on such a bum note. In hindsight I think I left my marathon in Longwood at the 3/4 a few weeks ago

Toughest race I've ever done, was on target up to halfway...by 16 miles I was reverting to plan B of 3:43 (to beat my Tralee 2017 time of 3:43:41) but at 20 miles I had to walk for the first time ever in a race. It was so hard after that with a race/walk strategy of a 0.5/1mi running with maybe 30 seconds walking at spots. Just ran of gas. Had to have a right chat with myself as to what I was at and reverting to plan C to ensure to beat my DCM 2016 time (3:57:34).

Had Thomas Fraizer entered and won would you have an issue?
    .

Thomas Frazer is an Irish citizen, holds an Irish passport and represents Ireland when afforded the opportunity. Even though he has resided in the US, is married to an American and has children who have American citizenship, he is unable to medal/compete in American championships as he is not an American citizen. In the US only American citizens are permitted to win medals and compete in their championships. It's the same in Kenya and Ethiopia from my understanding. Even if you reside there for large portions of the year (like the Robertson twins in Kenya or Mo Farah in the US/Ethiopia) you cannot medal/compete in their championships unless you are actually a citizen of that country.

Gary O'Hanlon was first Irish man home today. He was told before the elite briefing yesterday that Freddy would not count in the Irish Championship today if he (Freddy) was 1st Irish club man home. When Gary crossed the finish line today he believed he had won the national title. He ran inspired today in the belief throughout that he was in line to win that title.

Managed to finish in just over 4 and a half hours. Training for whole period was shocking but f*** it was for good cause and managed to raise 500+ for great cause. Considering he bad first 10 miles went I was just delighted to finish!!

Freddy is here for more than six months of the year yet nothing was said when the American Jeremy Phillips ran in the national senior outdoors this year winning the 100m. I doubt Phillips has an Irish passport or has lived here for more than six months in a year.

    +1

Freddy is more Irish than Tori Pena will ever be. How many years has he been running for Raheny now? How many races has he run in Ireland, rather than flying in to fulfil the minimum obligation.

Give it a rest lads. Best runner won.

High 2:18 should not win a national title really. He should have no complaints. There are women running that time globally.

He should enjoy his PB and keep quiet. It doesn't reflect well on him. Where was the uproar when Sergiu won national titles before gaining citizenship?

I was looking forward to some food after crossing the finish line.
Got my t-shirt, and then a goody bag.
Open the bag to discover a pouch of soup. Great... i was starving.
    But i went home hungry...as i could not find a microwave :-)

Weather could not have been better, and organisation was top class. Thanks to all who made it happen.

What has the time or the fact that 'women' have run that time have to do with the issue?

He was first IRISH man to cross the line,so he should be Irish champion,The time is irrelevant.

Probably not much. Just feels like a super soft victory if that kind of time wins.

How is Freddy winning any different to Sergiu winning back in the day when he was competing for Moldova?

If anyone wants to edit me on the table as on phone 2634 3:26:20 finish

Tough over final 10km. Left straight away after to pick up the new member of the family and bring him home.

Of course the toddler was up just as much during the night. Sleep it's overrated.

    Thanks for the nice comments

No miracle for me: had to slow down in second half.

High 2:18 should not win a national title really. He should have no complaints. There are women running that time globally.

He should enjoy his PB and keep quiet. It doesn't reflect well on him. Where was the uproar when Sergiu won national titles before gaining citizenship?

I agree with everything you have said. Also, are we sure Gary was born in Ireland? Just asking, as I heard he was born in England and came over when he was 9 yrs old. I’m not sure if this is true but if it is, it kind of puts him in the same boat, to some extent, as Freddy and Sergiu. Apologies if I'm wrong on this, maybe somebody could confirm if Gary was 'born' here-not that it makes any real difference.

But we should also celebrate Gary’s performance as one of the greatest Irish performances of all time.

Running 2.18 at DCM, aged 43, is doable (Gary’s just done it). Running 2.19 at Berlin (arguably the fastest legit course on the planet) for a big PB and then, 4 weeks later or so, beating that at DCM is awesome, especially as Gary hasn't broken 70mins (2.20 pace) for a half in 3 years—according to his FB page.

To put some context on this, it's like Kipchoge running 1.55-56 for the marathon in Berlin (he ran 2.03) and then, 4 weeks later, running 1.54-55 at DCM; or, Kipsang running 1.55-56 at Berlin and then 1.54-55, 4 weeks later at DCM. (But note, they are not 43 and they live and train at around 7,800 feet.)

Or, to bring it a bit closer to these boards, it's like a 40+ yr old guy with a 72 Half time, running Berlin in 2.23 and then four weeks late running 2.22 at DCM. I doubt there are any 72 guys on here running under 2.28 at Berlin, never mind running 2.22 at DCM.

Gary’s performance(s) in the last 4 weeks have shown him to be an incredible runner. His powers of recovery are even more remarkable. It'll be interesting to hear what Jerry Kiernan has to say on this...
