Suntour VX Alternatives?

Hi. I have an old Raleigh racer from the 80's. It has a Suntour VX rear derailleur. I was cycling and the chain got jammed in the derailleur and damaged it. I took it to a bicycle shop and the guy said the spring in the derailleur which keeps tension on the chain has snapped and he advised getting a replacement Suntour…

I looked on ebay and the Suntour VX derailleurs seem to cost quite a bit compared to the value of the bicycle. I was wondering if I can replace the Suntour VX one with a different one? Thanks

if it's a friction shifting derailleur (unless it's the lite version from 1992 it should be http://www.disraeligears.co.uk/Site/SunTour_derailleurs_-_the_V_story.html ) most other friction shifting derailleurs from that era should work.
