"The disappointing (World Cup) result is the reality of where we are.
"The 20s programme is a really just a benchmarking exercise at international level.

"Even though the provincial games are important, for us we're about benchmarking our players and systems at international level.

"We're revamping all of our U-18, U-19 and U-20 coaches. We or the Academy managers don't believe that (playing U-20s interpros) is the best way for them to be stretched or tested."

I wonder what the alternative to u20 interpros is? Bigger focus on the club game, or more internationals?

well they've pushed more u20's to play senior club rugby.

Ah I see, maybe Nuci is thinking u20s in general isn't stretching those players so they'll scrap the interpro competition in order to leave those guys playing league rugby.

doesn't make much sense as players trained all summer as an u20 group and played u20 "friendlies"

u20 interpros wouldn't prevent players from playing more u20 internationals or from playing AIL rugby.

    No interpros obviously affected them

Clubs will suffer as usual you will likely see more academy games between English and french clubs

Maybe an u20 equivalent of the B&I Cup

you'd hope they'd play a higher standard of academy i.e saracens etc.

An academy league would be good. Don't they have one in the Premiership?

It doesn't have to be all 14 teams, but even a competition between the Irish and Scottish academies might work

maybe in the future.. but isn't it more about the u20's, not players who have made a provinces academy?

I dunno, getting rid of the u20 interpro's continues to be a dumb idea and I have yet to be told why it was a good idea.

Why not run the 20s similar to the AIL have double headers in 1A & 1B with teams playing an All Ireland League

Because they have evaluated that the u20 leagues don't challenge players enough and they want a higher standard of games for potential u20 internationals?

so playing senior AIL rugby combined with other games against non irish u20's?

So 20s is like ive mentioned simply about LTPD and its about getting look at players within national set up and seeing how they can improve.
Provincial games just at 20s level isnt deemed good enough now by the pro coaches in long term interests of players

How would you get more internationals? When would you play them? Who would you have Ireland play?

But have the best u20s(ie guys whove been starring/playing most under 20 internationals in a year) already been playing a lot of senior club rugby. And this always has been the case

How does it not make sense. They trained through the summer so the coaches can analyse them and support their development and then they will go back to the clubs and ideally quite a few will progress to play provincial A level as well as playing club AIL rugby.

They do have one in Premiership and its 10/12 games if that. Players also regularly go on loan to national one or championship sides and quite a few national one sides would be equivalent of AIL sides.

But all the coaches dont see it as a bad idea and i think theyd know more on this issue...
20s only games replaced by games involving older players can significantly aid the guys eligible for 20s playing in the game which aids the 20s team much more than those guys dominating at 20s level provincially.

Do clubs have resources for that(national league) and not all clubs in division 1 field at under 20 level especially the Ulster clubs and would that improve the standards compared to the JP Fanagan and Donal Walsh Trophys?

If it goes to academy leagues clubs will suffer as they will not see the players at all and they will be parachuted in and out when it suits province not club as they have little or no regard for club schedule.

Every senior club should have a 20s as it is the best way to develop players for the senior team

Agree thaht the best 20s play senior rugby already very few that will make it are not.

We also need to be realistic in that the majority of under 20s will not make it as pros just not good enough that has always been the way and will continue. Academys telling every provincal 20 that they must play senior now even telling under 19s so in Leinster they tell upwards of 40 lads this every year and each year the academy takes possibly 3 forwards and 3 backs which disheartens the lads who have demanded senior rugby and burnt bridges with clubs and a lot move on or give up. Whats good for the pro game is not neccessarily good for the majority of players or for the club game. Clubs need to be given credit for developing players and allowed to continue to do so with the back up of provinces. Not many provincal manager following up correctly with club coaches re players they think they are above that, the divide between club and province is getting bigger and both province and club will be poorer for it.

Agreed both Silvester and Dunne did very well and Silvesters try was magnificent as was Michael Courtneys. Joe Byrne did very well for DUFC against P Dooley when he came on-hes a prospect no doubt.

Interesting that the captain of the Belvo team that won the SCT 2 years ago who had given up -Brian Egan- is now back playing in Trinity for the 20s-wont be long before he moves up the teams there id say.

Good to hear on Egan, took a season out after SCT IIRC.

Not eligible for Ireland u20, will have a long club career if he sticks at it.

Well the starting UCD squad was clearly not a full strength side.
Ye most certainly not. Thought first half they struggled. Last 10-15 blew them away when Reilly and Harry B came on.

On paper they are their most talented players.

Craig Casey had double knee surgery, very doubtful he will be available for 6 nations.

Not sure how long James Kenny, Patrick Patterson, Hugh O'Sullivan & Jonny Stewart are out for.

Ucd only started training the last 2/3 weeks too so theyve a bit of catching up to do with other teams.
Do ucd have 2 20s teams again this year by any chance?

UCD also have a lot less talent than previous years IMO.

You would hope and assume UCD do have a second 20s. The third division in 20s doesnt have fixtures yet. With final round of JP Fanagan 1/2 qualifiers this weekend. Hopefully all divisions fixtures will then be published

I believe prem 3 is going to be 13 teams as apparently Coolmine have already pulled out
