Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Gerard's lost to Gonzaga in the Juniors 5-0. Gonzaga scored very early and while Gerard's fought and defended well they never really looked like winning it!

Gonzaga also beat St. Fintans on the next pitch in the Seniors. Not sure of the final score but looked like a very tight game!

Big day of schools Rugby for both the Senior and Junior league quarterfinals. Any players or teams impressed today in Juniors and Seniors? From what I heard there was the age old problem of students being touch judges...

    can't do much about that
You can be lucky enough to get referees midweek never mind touch judges.
Bish beat Jes in Galway derby in opening pool game in junior schools Connacht cup today. Game finished 31-14
Jes possibly had some better individuals but were not clever enough on the day.

    CBC v Ard Scoil
    PBC v Castletroy
    Glenstal v Rockwell
    Qualifier v Crescent
    Bandon v St Munchins
Its same draw for both junior and senior bar a slight difference in junior

The senior and junior sides from Coláiste Pobail Bheanntraí and St Clements Limerick are in the qualifier finals.
Winner in the senior faces the comp while at junior level the winner faces the comp while the loser faces ard scoil

You'd have to wonder are they aiming to bring through their JCT players from last year who were above average for most schools but very good for Clongowes. Some very secretive things happening behind closed doors.

Dunno if they are worrying, just notable he hasn't played much. Then again he is a 17 year old who isn't finished growing so no need to push him.

Not surprised by Carroll, clearly Moran/Barron are their 10's this year.. let him play as much as possible at 2XV level and not have him sitting on bench. He is clearly their 10 of the future.

He most most of preseason last year aswell..watching Carroll at jct level I expected him to give Moran a run for his money. Mark o Briene is one to keep an eye on,been excellent this season surpassed Andrew smith in my opinion .

    Anyone of note from Clongowes?

Playing up Michaels and Playing down dark horses Clongowes isn't going to work this year.

There'll be schools waiting for their "serious effort at cup time" in the first/second rounds.

In fairness though with the level of talent Michaels have had in the last few years it’s a farce that they perform so poorly Cup time, one wouldn’t exactly be wrong in saying they’re a pre season team, so it’s hard not to hype them up when talking about them as individuals

    Yeah..

On preseason results and talent they should be favourites but they arent for a reason.. as a team no one expects them to win the cup because its the same story every year

Ah they arent that much more talented than belvo/rock and with teenagers anything can happen in a once off game.. nature of a cup competition

Although I do acknowledge your point if you look at their Instagram stmcrugby they are very keen to point out the amount of Leinster/ International players they have and to have as many as they do to have won 2 senior cups in comparrison to Blackrocks donination 5 years ago and now Belvo, it is truly bizarre that they haven’t won it at all really

Brian omeara made a hash of one year that they should have won

Belvo were more street smart the last few years. Smarter players clearer on game plan maybe or just better coached?
You are dealing with teenagers and the fact that team changes yearly can hardly classify the players as bottlers or anything like that.
Clearly doing a lot right to be producing quality players/teams year on year

Instagram is for Michaels people. It's called be happy about what you've been given( the amount of contracts handed out in comparison to relatively few cup wins) As for wondering what went on at the school that there is so few cups until there is some serious coaches brought in there won't be more Cups at the school

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,129 ✭✭✭Granny15

You wonder what’s going on there that it keeps happening.

Hiring coaches that aren't experienced is a problem for the school but we are trying to keep the coaching in house of past pupils only. That and not having the same past pupil support as the more established schools with past pupil clubs

Pressure and bottlers tag doesn't help.

Previous years as cup winners has no bearing on this years teams just as friendly season has no bearing on teams performance at cup time

What sort of question is that? Thats the whole point of development rugby, to help as many players as possible to the next level. The cups and leagues are just a bonus

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 3,585 ✭✭✭irishfan9

Im not saying it shouldnt be a priority but its not the be all that ends all..more michaels lads seem to keep playing club rugbywhen compared to other big schools and get involved in coaching etc.

I'm sure they are delighted with the success of the individuals but to think they don't desperately want to win the cup is mistaken.
All the schools desperately want to win it and it is the priority for anyone involved in the cup side starting 15.
That said the two things are not mutually exclusive. Developing your players to the best of their ability is a good way to go about winning the cup

Obviously they want to win it.. but it strikes me as a goal not the sole purpose for playing rugby.. hence why so many continue post school in club rugby

True. Agree with what you are saying.

I think people on these threads forget that these are schools who have so many pupils of various abilities and have more than a cup as a goal. Sport being a brilliant outlet for mental health, general well being, camaraderie etc. There are so many schools participating year on year with no realistic chance of wining etc but still do it.

All that said i have no doubt there are people in michaels scratching their head trying to figure out how the hell they will win another cup and it becoming something of a monkey on their back again!
