Kirkham Grammar are the powerhouse of English schoolboy rugby and Michael’s destroyed them 66-0

FYI Most of Kirham grammar team were out injured for that match so no point reading too much into that although it’s Michaels cup to lose judging on performances thus far: won’t be long before a league team wins the cup again: the standard this year from league has been immense.

    What are Newbridge like?

  • Registered Users Posts: 140 ✭✭6elieve

    What are Newbridge like?

Saw them twice in pre season, and they were very average, but that 36-0 shoreline against pres makes me question how much effort was put into those matches. Must be a good side to win a cup game by 30 odd points.
Have a strong pack, Rigney and Prendergast the standouts

Pres were awful in that game.

Think comments regarding tarrant were very harsh

Yes he played poorly but still had the balls to step up and take a drop kick with about 5 mins left and at the end of the day he did win them the game.

Also chased a high ball and absolutely flattened the Gerard’s wing

Blackrock showing all the attributes that a team need to win a senior cup, very hard to beat. All this talk about St Michaels with one hand on the cup. Rubbish. They only have 2 cups for a reason whereas blackrock are sitting on top of 68. As we already know Michaels are specialists in failure as we will see again this year

God only made one thing perfect and that’s blackrocks record against st Michaels in the senior cup.

The power of blackrocks maul today was incredible. I wouldn’t be surprised if they mauled Michaels the whole way down Ailesbury road and into the school.

Very surprised they didn't use the maul more today, was almost unstoppable, but before you get too carried away, Belvo are still in the cup ,if they get full panel back they will be hard to beat, best coached team and they know how to win

Wouldn't it be hard to exit the stadium with an 8 man maul and go out onto heavy traffic while the maul is still intact

Yes I agree Belvo are dangerous but the team even without the injuries doesn’t look nearly as strong as last year

    They’d stop the traffic.

I think the ref will try stop them leaving the pitch due to safety reasons

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 134 ✭✭Ally Bren 92

    They’d stop the traffic.

But then again aren't they there to play a game of rugby on donnybrook, not to physical maul a team back to their school

  • Registered Users Posts: 314 ✭✭Stephen Hawkins football boots

As an ex pupil I want Belvo to win it naturally, but you are right not as good as last year, if Belvo don't win it , then anyone but Michaels or Roscrea for me

    Michaels to win by 4
    Mary's to win by 8
    Belvo to win by 12
    IMO

Pretty sure the whole mauling them down Ailesbury Road was just a figure of speech and not the actual intent of the Blackrock team.

You also have to bring into account the fitness levels of the players as mauling 1600 metres can be pretty gruelling for 18 year olds weighing 90 kg+

But then again would they be mentally fit to carry out such a task.it would be very interesting to see when they hopefully meet next round

Don’t think ref will allow it if Blackrock were to maul Michaels out of the stadium, surely the stewards will stop it if they try and go towards the gate?

You are completely delusional if you think anyone else but Rock are winning the cup this year. They will take home the Double, without much competition, today wasn’t purely a hiccup. From a Belvo past pupil.

Don’t be so arrogant, you’re clearly taking the piss if you think rock will win the double this year without any competition, they struggled against Gerard’s today, so it will be competitive for them to win the next round no matter who they play against

Not true, rock really showed today that they are still the powerhouses of Irish rugby they showed their power with a serious maul and scrum with molony and mcgagh two workhorses in the pack. To say that michaels have one hand on the cup is an outrageous statement they are notorious bottlers and have never and will never beat rock in a cup match, every year is the ‘dream team’ for them and then always crack under the pressure at donnybrook and this year is no different.

Would have to disagree with you on that considering Michaels beat rock in pre season in Blackrock

Pre season means nothing when it comes to cup time if I’m right I think michaels have never beaten rock in a cup match at sct level in their long history. Rock are too strong unfortunately. as a Belvo past pupil I would like to see them do well this year but rock will win

Well same thing was said about rock last year, they destroyed every team all season then bottled it in the final, so you can’t say rock are too strong, what makes you think rock are too strong?

Michaels the kings of pre season which has led to them winning the cup every year..... oh wait

I agree, stmc have a huge pack with forwards like Scott Penny and Ryan Baird and with a magnificent backline with the likes of Chris Cosgrave, David Ryan and Mark O’Brien, Michaels seem too strong for all these teams in the competition, which is why they play internationally against teams from New Zealand and England etc

DIDnt they beat both those English teams like 60-0 ?

The Wellington college side they pumped by 72 points was severely weakened beyond recognition. Missing all 4 England u18/17 internationals.
Do not know about Kirkham who lost 32-0, but considering they have had 4 players named in the England age grade squads this year also I suspect they would have also had injuries.

This years Sedbergh 1st XV verus St. Michaels would probably be the strongest school boy fixture out there. Sedbergh absolutely walked over pretty much all English competition. 6 England agegrade players off the top of my head, with 2 more playing for Wales/Scotland.

You must have been at a different match to the one I attended! If that Rock team is to win the SCT they will need to play a lot better than they did yesterday!Their handling errors and poor decision making were astonishing at times. I have no particular gra for either Rock or Micheals but on the basis of what I've seen so far I would fancy Michaels to come out on top!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,405 ✭✭✭FrannoFan

Amazed people are writing off Rock!
They won and are into the semi final! Belvo weren't overly impressive against Gonzaga and Michaels were soso against Terenure.

I can only assume it is because people are doing the same thing that happens every year- the league sides are underestimated. Gerrards won the league-whoever comes through that competition is always a good side (newbridge/roscrea in recent years)

Rock have a big pack, an excellent maul, a god goal kicker and the 10 had a few wobbles but he also managed a few excellent touch finders.
Still a very likely winner of the competition

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,777 ✭✭✭C3PO

I am certainly not writing off Rock but, as I said above, they will need to do better to win the cup! I suspect they were a little arrogant in their approach to yesterdays match - I certainly found their "display" to their crowd before kick-off a bit insulting to Gerards but maybe that's just me?
Anyway, time will tell and I'm looking forward to the rest of the tournament!
