Sad to see Gunner make excuses like that.

Eye pokes are part and parcel. Look at Gustafson and Jones.

Jiu jitsu is his strong point but he tried fighting standing up. Bad mistake.

The thing is they shouldn't be part and parcel at all, some eye pokes can essentially half blind you, which seems to be what happened to Gunnar. The new rules are meant to be stricter on eye pokes. Also Gunnar is the kind of guy who would only mention it if it seriously affected him. He should've gotten time to recover.

He's also of the mindset of a proper mixed martial artist, he should be dangerous anywhere and he'll only go to the ground if it's his best available opportunity, he started off doing well on the stand-up.

The eye poke was huge. Sure it might have been accidental, but I think it had such a clear impact on Gunni that the win should be voided IMO. Very very unlucky in hindsight.

The eye poke happened in the first exchange. Should he have sat down on his arse and butt scooted over because jiu-jitsu is his strong point? Or maybe if he asked nicely Ponzinibbio would have just jumped into his guard for him.

No they are not. No more than hair pulling or kicks to the groin. They are illegal.

    Don't feed him lads.

Anyway, Looks like there were actually 2 separate eye pokes.

Jesus that second one is nasty.

    Second one looks intentional.

They don't look great but I still think he was done after the initial right hand that rocked him.

I know most of this forum are gunni fans so won't appreciate it, but when I saw the replay I pissed myself laughing, it was a strange knockout , light jab to the chin and he collapsed like a telephone pole. The eyepoke looked nasty tho. Amazed he didn't say it to the ref if he couldn't see.

Christ look at this video! Whatever about Gunni not complaining to the ref, this is mad. Gunni should have stopped it after the first exchange but he knows his fault in this. It's mad how much you can miss until footage is slowed down.

    Dirty bastard Ponz

That last one to the left eye was 100% deliberate. Amazing what you don't see in real time. Commentators have a tough a tough job

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,735 ✭✭✭ASOT

The last one was without a doubt an intentional eye gouge.

4 pokes within 30 seconds is inexcusable. Queer street or not.

There is definitely 3 CLEAR eye pokes. Doesn't matter if intentional or not. Again, it's amazing, I didn't notice any of it in real time and thought Gunni was looking for excuses till I saw the slow mo

Hard to argue the intent IMO

Very easy to make everything look precise and deliberate when in slo-mo

To not complain to the ref during the fight is incredible

    Disagree wholeheartedly.

4 eye pokes in under 60 seconds is not arguable.

It's clearly an intentional gameplan to swing and paw with the open hand. Gunni was failed by the ref and by his own willingness to let all of them go unreported.

Result should be appealed, if for nothing else than to make a point of highlighting it for Ponzinibbio's future fights.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,202 ✭✭✭maximoose

Oh that's what I meant, clearly intentional to me!

Ha sorry I read it as "hard to argue it was intentional" :(

I feel really bad for Gunni now. I'm confident in saying I don't think he gets dropped if it wasn't for that extended eye gouge in the finishing sequence. It clearly caused him to squint and take his eyes off the incoming strikes.

Not sure how you can say it's nasty and malicious from a screen grab with no context?

Definite poke and I'm sure it affected him though.

    Really?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,442 ✭✭✭LollipopJimmy

Gunni failed himself here by not raising his hand to the referee, very silly but also I understand the heat of the moment and trying to just plough on.

The Charkie Ward finish reminded me of Tim Boetsch
