At 90, it's no shock but it's sad all the same. He retired relatively young as actors go - I see the last film he made was The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen back in 2003.

His last few films were rather... not good. (His last film was Sir Billi in 2012).

The whole production of LoEG was a nightmare, apparently (Sets getting flooded, no extension on the filming deadline, etc etc). Connery wasn't in the best of form, physically. Much of his movements, such as running, were done by a double, because he was starting to have issues with his knees.

Ad-libbed quite a few lines in that film too. When he said 'she talks in her sleep' during the scene where he's tied to the chair with Harrison Ford, Connery adlibbed that. The crew cracked up laughing, and Spielberg said 'well that's it, that line's in the film'.

In Finding Forrester, he adlibbed another line, one of the first he says, when we meet his character. It was to imply the character was gay, that his 'closeted lifestyle' had a dual meaning.

Connery was a smarter actor than people gave him credit for.

I only recently listened to his delightful "Six Degrees of John Sessions" on BBC radio. A wonderful expressive voice.

Such a varied career. He did voice work on Spitting Image, and appeared in major film productions such as The Bounty, Gangs of New York.
    RIP John.

    From that article:
He was outed as gay by the Evening Standard in 1994 ...

He recalled to The Guardian in 2017: “I was asked [by a journalist] very robustly: ‘Are you gay?’ I said: ‘Yes I am, but my parents don’t know and I don’t want them to find out by picking up a copy of the Evening Standard.’ The journalist said she thought I should tell them and outed me. My mother died unexpectedly six weeks later and my father quickly developed dementia. It was never mentioned.”
What a despicable thing for that "journalist" to do.

Sessions was everywhere for about 12 years but he high water mark for me will always be Stella Street as Mrs Huggett and Al Pacino.

Sadly, it was the 90s-the gossip rags were eager to out someone.

Stephen Gately came out of the closet precisely because he had no other choice-he either came out, or a journalist was going to out him.

Those rags didn't care. They still don't. John Wesley Shipp was 'outed' in some rag mag in the 90s.
He was starring in a high profile TV show (The Flash) and was pretty much on the up and up...
Soon as that article appeared, his career nosedived.

Funny thing is, he's not gay. (He keeps himself very private, was rumoured to be engaged a while back. Often photographed with girlfriends, but doesn't matter to folks.)
Similar thing happened with Vin Diesel-was rumoured to be gay for decades... round the time Paul Walker died (shortly before, I think) we learned Diesel was VERY private... down to having 3 children, and and a girlfriend.
But the rumours stifled his career for a long while.

Wasn't Vin Diesel and co star Michelle Rodriguez together at one time, I know she is bisexual

Yup, but didn't stop the rags...

Remember, Louis Walsh made up rumours that Gately was engaged to a woman (one of Walsh's acts he was managing) long before he came out.

Geoffrey Palmer has died aged 93. Great innings, he was loads of stuff over the last 50 odd years.

Narrated grumpy old men. Doesn't seem so long ago.

First came to my attention as Jimmy, the mad right wing brother in law of Reggie Perrin, plotting his right wing coup, to sort out the pesky socialist in 1970s Britain.

[Jimmy is explaining to Reggie what kinds of people his secret army will be against]

Jimmy Anderson : Wreckers of law and order. Communists, Maoists, Trotskyists, neo-Trotskyists, crypto-Trotskyists, union leaders, Communist union leaders, atheists, agnostics, long-haired weirdos, short-haired weirdos, vandals, hooligans, football supporters, namby-pamby probation officers, rapists, papists, papist rapists, foreign surgeons - headshrinkers, who ought to be locked up, Wedgwood Benn, keg bitter, punk rock, glue-sniffers, "Play For Today", Clive Jenkins, Roy Jenkins, Up Jenkins, up everybody's, Chinese restaurants - why do you think Windsor Castle is ringed with Chinese restaurants?

Reginald Perrin : You realise the sort of people you're going to attract, don't you, Jimmy? Thugs, bully-boys, psychopaths, sacked policemen, security guards, sacked security guards, racialists, Paki-bashers, queer-bashers, Chink-bashers, anybody-bashers, rear Admirals, queer admirals, Vice Admirals, fascists, neo-fascists, crypto-fascists, loyalists, neo-loyalists, crypto-loyalists.

Jimmy Anderson : Do you think so? I thought recruitment might be difficult.

Just to clear up any confusion it was Judi Dench that was married to Michael Williams not Geoffrey Palmer.
