Just seen what look amazingly long odds of over 20/1 on Tony Martin. Does that make sense given the nature of teh course - that he is a rank outsider?
I'd give him better odds than that, but I think he's one win all year in a TT?

He is 77kg ...Tony Martin is 75Kg, Rohan Dennis is 72kg and Stefan Kung is 85kg , Maciej Bodnar = 72Kg and Thomas = 71KG

The thing is not about him wining...its about him taking part and going up against these guys .. Bigger guys from all over the world enter the TT for their country without any chance of wining

Nico Roche is 70Kg and he will give it a good go ....as he does on very steep and very long climbs...

ITT in worlds usually have climbs ...if you want to progress you take part ..no course is ever 100% suitable

And as for too much racing in his legs why is he doing the RR if that is the case...harder day and not something he has a hope in hell of featuring in

Mind boggling....what happened to wanting to represent your country
Its a poor show ..and other lads representing their country will be as young and have raced as much

    Those weights are way off.
He is representing his country, in the road race and every race he's done this year. He even had a tri colour printed on him from July onward.
    What more do people want?
Yes ITT worlds courses usually are somewhat rolling but nothing like this. The big TT specialists will hemorrhage massive time on that ramp to the finish. If that ramp was in the middle of the course the effects wouldn't be so big but this has been practically setup for a Froome/Dumoulin battle. Why destroy yourself if you're not in medal contention.
A taking part mentality is reserved for sportive riders, not elite riders.

Still the reigning champion though - & I don't think he'd a lot of succcess going into that one. I remember Cancellara won the Olympics TT at 18/1. It's not just about recent results but the pedigree of the rider, the nature of their focus on the biggest events . . . so I'd be more wondering if the course supposedly is seen as cutting him from the mix rather than recent results.

Why do so many other riders compete in the World Championships then?
There should be only about 25 competitors in the ITT then, rather than the usual 60-70.

I can't see past Froome or TomDum for the TT given the hill that finishes. I think it'll significantly slow down the likes of Martin. Froome to motor his way to a victory

For the craic. Pressure from sponsors or your federation too.
In Mullens case I'd imagine he's just picking his battles. To me the thought of getting shelled out of the top 10 when you're capable of a top 5 on the right course doesn't seem too appealing.

Ryan Mullen's absence in the TT seems very odd to me also, just to say it.

I dont think Tony Martin should be discounted....yes he is heavier than most and not a climber but this is his bread and butter and he will come prepared...He wont be afraid of a few hills and anyway he can make time on the flatter sections

From me Dumoulin is the favourite as he has focused on this event for awhile now ...while Froome may not have ....Dennis, T. Martin & Roglic are also good bets as very good at this discipline and have also focused on this TT

BTW ' those weight are way off' ....they are from Procycling stats and are no more off than saying Mullen is 80KG

Lol incredible how a website is more accurate than Ryan's scales.

Hold on MPFLG, Tony Martin has been way off the boil this year on tts since winning the jersey last year. Even allowing for peaking at the right time it's very hard to see him being in the mix on this one. Especially with the climb at the end and the recently proven pedigree of the other main contenders against the clock and on climbs.

Sure he could be using the butchers "balanced" scales as far as we know!

This. Two 4th's in the Tour had to have been painfully frustrating too.
Also, I hope he doesn't do the whole sandpaper thing, nobody likes seeing that.

Too late with that advice I'm afraid. I'm gone all in. Five euros thirty cents on the nose of Tony "Useless" Martin.

And he's a fireman. This is Roy of the Rovers stuff. Surely worth an article in a mainstream paper sports supplement.
I was cheering on Contador the other day like any other fanboy but the Damien Shaw story of the last 2-3 years is just fantastic. Really inspiring.

And a few years before that was starting out in cycling at A4! Great story. Great to see Sean McKenna in there too!

What goes through those lads heads I wonder when they arrive on the start and are surround by guys they likely come home from work and watch highlights of in world tour events on eurosport.

I'm a bit confused but I think I'm right in taking that to mean, "Put down everything you've got on Tony Martin."

So that's another 5 euros 30 cents so on the German.

Quickstep for the TTT and Wellens e/w for the road race have my money. Considering Kwiat for the men's TT but not sure yet. Still thinking on the women's too.

Was watching the racing today and I would say Trentin for the RR if he could get the others to work for him next week..... won't happen. What did they say 30% of his wins have come in the last month? Either way he looked incredible today given he's 3 weeks of Veulta in his legs and his results there.

The Worlds have started with the Women's Elite TTT.

Immediate thoughts: Wow they have an amazing venue for the champs. The scenery is just amazing. The fans are plentiful and loud. Also, the TT course looks like hell compared to the pan flat Doha course last year.

    Should be a great week.

    ETA: The TTT course...

Have an eye on the womens TTT here too, sure is a fantastic part of the world to be riding a bike. Hill's must be hell on a TT bike though.

Was curious about something, why is it some events have national teams/riders and others pro's

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,263 ✭✭✭robyntmorton

It seems that the TTT is the pro/trade teams, as the individual countries may not have the personnel to field a team, coupled with the teams familiarity with each person in their TT unit.

The individual TT and the races are country based.

(Watching Team Virtu on that climb was torture! Especially when they lost one off the back. Having lost so many already they can't afford to lose anyone)

WHile the UCI (who's race this is...) are broadcasting the races line on their Youtube channel - https://www.youtube.com/user/ucichannel/

...except, it seems, for todays two TTT events

However, there is a feed for the TTTs from the UCIs own website, http://www.uci.ch/road/news/article/live-183860/?utm_content=bufferfa904&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

    But it is geo-blocked !

Poor FDJ. When even the dropped Sunweb rider (the team that started 3 minutes behind them) crosses the line ahead of you...
