Any cases of landlord being blamed for material tenant downloads?

My landlord says he is removing access on this basis!

I can understand his point but is there any real world examples?

Does the rent include Internet access and are there terms and conditions with it. There usually are with Internet access.

No, it was just there when we moved in.

Not mentioned anywhere in the lease.

Was it advertised as having Internet access...

No, in fact the current state of affairs is (or was until recently) that an IP address does not identify a person. However it doesn't stop every piece of electronics in the gaffee being seized (and taking about three years to be examined), including phones and the Sky box and the neighbours thinking they're living next-door to Gary Glitter. So if your LL has had a bad experience then one can see where he's coming from - can you get your own interwebz? Virgin offer month to month now. Still wouldn't prevent the above scenario.

You know the way you sign a landing page when logging on to Starbucks or a similar free wifi, anyone know how that is done? If its easy we could try to implement.

They're called Captive Portals. Easy enough to buy and configure.

Expect protocols like BitTorrent and some games to not work with such a connection (by default).

And if illegal material was ever discovered to have gone through such a device/piece of software it would be subject to seizure also. I think this LL is a bit bonkers but his concerns are not completely unfounded.
