It's the exact same logic you used.

Brushing your teeth helps to keep them healthy, removing food and preventing plaque, it's needed for hygiene purposes and if you want to keep your teeth. It also prevents bad breath which is not something you need when you're conversing with others. What exactly does making the bed achieve? Keeps the bed healthy?

Nope, you should always leave the covers off the bed to let the mattress "breathe", but I'd make the bed in the evening before getting into bed (unless I was lazy)

That wasn't the point rased though. The point was
Why do task X when it will be undone later
    Not
Why do task X when it has no benefit (beyond the visual improvement and comfort experienced by some posters)

If the duvet isn't on the floor then the bed is made.

You can do that neatly though!

Or you can fling it on the floor :P

The bed gets made in our house. I would feel like I was not coping with life if I didn't.

But who cares, each to their own.

If you were in the Marines in the US and didn't make your bed pristinely they would give you an absolute asses beating.

Ever wonder what the logic was behind that?

Discipline! Last thing you want is to find out too late that one of your soldiers is incapable of following an order regardless of whether they agree with it or not.

do you make the bed in the morning.
a friend of mine called round yesterday . we went into my room to get something and he was shocked that I don't make my bed.

I never make my bed unless I'm changing it or expecting visitors. not even for my GF. now its not left in a ball on top but half made .

older folk used to be on about making the bed. they said it has some magical powers to help you through the day

    do you make your bed

    yep

    can't stand an untidy bedroom

but I couldn't care less what anyone else does

I make it just before getting into bed, as in I shake out the duvet. I've never understood why beds need to be made in the morning, according to some.

I can't sleep in a bed where the duvet isn't tucked in at the bottom of the bed, don't know why but it drives me mad. I used to go out with this girl who would completely undo my made bed every night before we went to bed, she hated a made bed. To be honest I probably should have seen that as a clear sign that we were incompatible :D

I only have a duvet to deal with. I usually straighten it out but leave it folded back to air out the bed. I wouldn't place a high priority on bed making. I couldn't be dealing with it if there were lots of sheets and blankets to contend with.

Yeah, I'm always bemused when I stay at someone's house and have to spend the few minutes before bed dismantling an intricate installation of cushions and pillows. And then I feel bad throwing them on the ground. I just want one pillow please!

I like one or two cushions on a sofa to hold on to when I'm curled up or a sacrificial cushion to balance a dinner plate on that it's OK to spill food on. But multiple cushions on a sofa or bed just confuse my brain.

A lot of people have mentioned bed-airing and it reminds of me of one of my mother's quirks from my childhood; we were never allowed to have friends over for an impromptu sleepover or have a sleepover in any season than summer because my mother would get us to drag our mattresses outside to air against the side of the house in the couple of days before the sleepover. We were not allowed to have a sleepover unless the mattresses of our beds had been aired outside. Madness, Ted. :)

Let's just say, I've had a turbulent decade that made me realise that a lot of social niceties are just a bit unnecessary. My house is clean, a bit of messiness simply doesn't matter to me.

That feels trapped to me. In hotels I always kick the tucked in bits out.

I straighten my duvet when I get up. It feels better

Because some of us like to come home from work to a clean looking home?

Hoovering is also something you should try, makes the place look great.

 As said, my house is clean. Where did you infer anything about my hoovering habits from my posts?

On the tidy bedroom thing, I don't look into my bedroom much or at all in the evening and if I did, a messy bed wouldn't matter to me.

Using the same bed more than once is disgusting, I burn the old bed and replace it with a brand one with new sheets.

The thought of people using the same bed over and over again send shiver down me spine.

I sneak into your house everyday and swap the old bed and new bed around so you have just been burning the new beds each time :P

So you would hoover a bedroom, literally around an unmade bed, but not make the bed? I find that bizarre.

Why? They are two separate things. Making the bed (as distinct from changing the bed linen) doesn't make the bed any cleaner. Hoovering the room removes dirt and dust and does make the room cleaner. Making the bed makes it look neater but it is still as dirty as an unmade bed. And indeed, leaving it unmade airs it out better. Making the bed is all about appearances and I don't care about that.

Yeah this. Now remember kids to brush your teeth and make that bed for healthy gums and beds.

Why brush your teeth when you're only going to eat again in a few hours?

To prevent toothaches and promote dental hygiene which help can prevent some serious ailments. Terrible comparison in fairness.

    Fitted sheet and a duvet.

The second I get up I fold the duvet back to air the bed for the day, plump the pillows and straighten them up.
Takes all of 40 seconds and makes the room look tidy.

If I came home and the bed was unmade, I'd have to 'make it' before getting in. Luckily I share my bed with no one so this never happens :D

I always make the bed. Hate the thoughts of getting into a messy bed

When I get out of my bed it tends to look made with the top corner folded down. So I tend to leave it like that, but some mornings I'll straighten it up if it doesn't look good. There is the other times I make it look like I'm still in it to freak out my daughter.

Stilt People could indeed look in your window and wouldn't you like to be prepared for that eventuality?

I only make the bed when it needs to be made, which is not everyday.

Its a great feeling getting into a freshly made bed, an added boost if the sheets are fresh.

I just couldn't get in and sleep in a tossed up bed, chaos.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,462 ✭✭✭✭WoollyRedHat

Turn the cover inside out, put your hands in at the bottom corner, grab the duvet by the bottom corner, shake the cover down over the duvet and win at life.

    Takes about 30 seconds.

That sounds easy but I have the co-ordination of a pug. I'll wait for the robots.

Ahem. To the original question, no but I fold the duvet over twice and leave it at the bottom of the bed so the bed gets aired during the day.

I leave the covers over the footboard during the day, and the sheet off. Airs the bed and is less appealing to dust mites. Bed is made before getting into it.

You use a mattress sheet though right?.....right??

Couldn't be arsed with all the fluffy pillows and seven blankets and the likes. Duvet. Four pillows. Fitted mattress sheet.

It takes absolutely shag all time to straighten and smooth out the duvet. Two pillows under, and two pillows on top.

The room looks spotless then and getting into a made bed is far far nicer a feeling.

I hate when you go to a hotel and you come back to the room before the bed maker uppers have been. Place looks like sh*t. I'd go back out rather than get into the crumpledy bed.

Ah yeah, the fitted sheet would be on, generally a high thread count for the summer and brushed cotton for the winter. Don't use the flat sheet under the duvet at all though, drives me mad when hotels have them. My feet feel imprisoned!

Yeh not able for those tucked in sheets.

Have you ever made the mistake of getting in to brushed cotton wearing jammies? It's like wearing a velcro suit :D
