Hi, Does anyone know if a frequency expander added to a Japanese import counts as a modification regarding insurance? It may seem ridiculous but it says ANY change since car left factory is a modification - and you know how particular insurance companies are!!

Ah lot of companies do have a "non standard audio equipment" assumption which would seem to rule this (and aftermarket radios) out.

Whether its an issue for insurers that don't have this clause is for the individual insurer I guess. They move in mysterious ways!

It's amazing how difficult it is to get definitive answers on these things.

I think that the only way to protect yourself is to put the query to the insurance underwriters in writing.

If they indicate that they will accept the modification you are home and dry as you have declared it and they cannot say otherwise at a later date.

If they were to refuse to cover the modification you can than ask them to explain and justify their decision to you and the Financial Services Ombudsman.

Its the size of a matchbox, don't worry about it.
Fit it and enjoy the radio.

Barring it causes a significant change in the value of the vehicle ie 1k + more than the car is worth without it then it's not an issue.
