Cornmeal in Ireland?

I want to pick up a pack of this for a few dishes I want to make.

Had a look in Tesco last night, couldn't see any, nor could I see Maize, which I believe is the same stuff.

Aldi had cornflour, just wondering if it's the same stuff, or an acceptable substitute?

    Thanks.

First off, cornflour and cornmeal are definitely not interchangeable - horrible things have happened to people who experimented with using one instead of the other in recipes :D

I think my local tesco does have cornmeal in its specialist foods section, but a more reliable source is an asian supermarket - most of them carry PAN brand cornmeal. Uncooked polenta is the same thing, though it might not be milled to the same consistency as american cornmeal, so the texture might not be perfect.

    Thanks Bo.

It's a requirement for a (roasted in the oven) fried chicken dish I want to do for some visitors, calls for cornmeal on the chicken before breading, and also sprinkled over some sweet potato wedges I intend to serve on the side.

I'll be in my local Asian shop later, it's probably there, no doubt, but it's just not something I've ever been looking for before.

Sounds lovely, and should be a lot more forgiving if the texture of the meal is a bit different than if it was a baking-type recipe :)

I have seen guides online making cornmeal by blending up popcorn in a blender, i.e. unpopped kernels.

Useless info for you Rick, Yellow corn meal was what was imported to feed the starving during the famine.
