Advice on treating this

    Some advice please...

I recently bought this and chairs and benches for the patio.

Ive been that busy that Ive not yet had a chance to assemble it. It arrived as a flat pack. It is pressure treated but I was wondering about putting something on it to preserve it even further.

Any advice/suggestions on what to use?

Maybe contact the manufacture for advice, as you dont want to do anything to
affect any warranty/guarantee you have on the product.

I wouldn't do anything to it the first year except to give the bottom rail thats in contact with the ground a good soaking in clear Larsons preservative. Then next year when the wood has weathered a bit I'd give it a coat or two of Textrol. But to be honest for the cost of the item it would be cheaper to use it for a few years then buy a new one than to spend a lot of money on preserving its looks.

    Thanks.
Its not just the table I bought though, I've a pair if benches and chairs too so altogether it added up a bit! Was just hoping to get a little bit longer from it that is all.

Well the clear larsons will help stop any parts in contact with the ground rotting. The problem with pressure treatment is that it still only goes into the surface and any rot often starts at the cut ends which are were all the joints are so if the larsons doesn't stain the wood you can also flood the joints with it. If it stains the wood then you could treat the whole lot. I have moveable chicken runs in contact with the soil that are 10 years old with no sign of rot. Larsons does stink but outside it soon goes.

Textrol is expensive and if you leave stuff outside will need recoating every two years. Its no good in the first year as its a treatment than needs to soak into the wood but it does a nice job keeping the colour and is an excellent preservative. If you like the same company that do Textrol also do a wood colour/cleaner restorer that restores the original wood colour before treating so you can give it a clean and retreatment every couple of years.

Sorry its Larsens  http://www.mcmahons.ie/wood-preservative-5l-clear.html but it seeems that the formulation has changed http://www.larsenbuildingproducts.com/products/range/8/category/38/-/0/product/316/ so the new one may not soak in as well, not tried it yet.
