It is listed as Carcross Desert, the smallest desert, but is really just some sand dunes.

Smallest desert in the world? Is it smaller than the Burren?

Some argue Carcross is not a desert and I don't think I have ever heard anyone refer to The Burren as a desert ?
A rocky limestone karst landscape yes.

Anyway I think Carcross "desert" is smaller than The Burren.

I am not allowed discuss …

I agree, it's not a desert in the climate sense of the term, just extensive sand dunes left behind by the recent glaciation of the region.

There's a more authentic small desert in the border region of B.C. and Washington state near Osoyoos, B.C. known as the "pocket desert" that is something like five miles north-south and two miles east-west. Maybe that's the smallest desert.

I had trouble last time uploading images from google earth so I will try again, either a new picture will appear or I will hand off to somebody who can post.

Not having much luck downloading images from Google Earth but I do have one of my own here which will serve to keep the thread moving forward.

This rock formation has a name so that will be the "correct" answer, also give an approximate location (I can give the exact co-ordinates later for anyone who wants to see this on google earth).

The view is approximately east from a highway and the distance of the rock formation is about two miles from the camera.

So you're looking for more than "Monument Canyon Trail; Colorado National Monument; Grand Junction, Colorado" ?

not if that was right, but it's not actually the location (think it must look similar, but the rock formation upper left has a specific name and it's several hundred miles away from Grand Junction and not in Colorado).

Here's another hint to save fruitless searching, the location shown is not in a national park or national monument.

I will give a hint here so we can move this towards solution and get back to regular business ...

... the rock formation is named for what it resembles, on a scale of about 100:1 as far as anyone using it that way.

... and it's in Utah. as I mentioned, it's not in a national park or monument, but there is a national monument about 30 miles southeast of this location (or to the right of the scene).

    Cathedral Rock, Moab, Utah?

    No, location is further south.

Well, I have the feeling this is either not a very popular choice of location to search, or impossible to find, so I will move things along by stating the location and inviting anyone to post a more normal sort of google earth view ...

... anyway, it's a rock formation called Jacob's Chair and you can see it from Utah State Route 95 between the Colorado River and Natural Bridges National Monument.

so fire away and we'll get this thread re-activated.
