Not Quebec. So far the correct country not guessed.

    San Diego ?

No but correct country now. It might narrow the search to consider what the ships in the harbour might be loading.

Mobile, Alabama? I’m thinking it’s coal they’re loading, but that guess isn’t based on an awful lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,572 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

No to Mobile, probably close as to what they are loading (two items at two different locations in the picture, I think). Loading and not unloading is a clue too.

I will give another clue without posting another view, if you turned around and looked east, you would be looking along a pathway with housing on your right, a short expanse of water on your left and a lift bridge over a canal cut into a breakwater for these ships to exit, so this view we have is a protected harbour with open water back behind the perspective (to the east).

Crude oil, MT? Somewhere accessible to the Gulf of Mexico? Louisiana? Looks too hilly to be on the delta, so I'll go for Baton Rouge over New Orleans.

That looks like a grain silo on the left?

I've found a couple of locations that fit the latest clue, so I'll go for Pascagoula?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,572 ✭✭✭✭M.T. Cranium

Okay here's a big clue, no guess within 1000 km so far, the water you see is not salt water.

You’re dead right josip, it’s Duluth, Minnesota on the north shore of Lake Superior.

That was a great one to play MT, solid clues and a really cool location.

Sorry, I was a bit late getting back to the thread ... but as you can see it is Duluth. Interesting ports around there, including Superior, WI at the south end of the harbour. That's where the Edmund Fitzgerald loaded up (I think).

Won’t be able to post a pic until tomorrow evening, so if anyone has one in the meantime, fire away.

Right, no idea if this will be difficult or not, but there should be enough to work with in this:

    Nope.

First clue: it’s a major port for both passengers and freight in its country, but it doesn’t quite crack the country’s top 5 most populated cities.

    Gdansk?

Nantes? (can you tell I am not looking at google earth just going with your clue)

Not Nantes, but I’ll give a more helpful clue then:

The primary sailing route out of the port leads into an archipelago, and eventually into a larger sea.

I was going to veer into some historical clues, but if you’re trying to solve it with Google Earth, it’s only fair I go with geography.

That’s it josip. Funny thing about that is it was actually the Finnish capital for a little while back in the 1800s after the war, but the Emperor of Russia felt it was too Swedish so he gave that status to Helsinki.

It is too, but it is in Finland....... Why say Sweden?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,122 ✭✭✭✭josip

When Swedes hear that you're going on the booze cruise to Turku, some of them will mutter that we're still kind of in Sweden when we're there.
Which also seems to rub the Fins in Stockholm the wrong way for some reason...
