Mayhem on the roads here in SW Donegal, hearing reports of lorries stuck on many roads

They must be very inexperienced drivers

Why? Pretty ridiculous comment for someone that doesn't know the local terrain or hills.

Not really,if you can’t drive properly in an inch or two of snow you may give up

In all fairness you are not here in Donegal at the moment, driving in these conditions I find your comment laughable , not everything is black and white.

Well I can only say if an employee of mine took a hill route knowing he wasn’t experienced enough for it ,rather than taking a longer route and not getting stuck,I’d have stern words for them
Plenty of hilly dwellers near me used to snow do not get stuck in it
I met a milking machine repair van on a high road near Aughavanagh recently driving no problem in a good 10cm cover and it was pelting down
It’s not laughable as a business owner to have drivers unnecessarily stuck on road conditions they’ve no idea how to deal with

Snowing here at Grange, D13. Quite weak nature as it’s also very sunny.

    Now hail.

Not posting much so far today because my weather books have arrived and they will keep me going for quite some bit!

I work for a major fleet tracking company.

Weather can be a massive issue for even the most experienced of drivers. Boston for instance, where they usually get a lot of snow, is the location on our system that has the most harsh-driving events and collisions.

I think all your best laid plans will come to nothing, once you take a peek at the 12z and see an easterly over us.

ICON seems to be close enough to UKMO too.
JMA not too far off either.

    I'm getting excited

The UKMO monthly outlook was last updated at 228 am this morning with no prognosis change for eastern England and southern England
They’d have seen their own model then and seem happy enough to ignore the ECMWF in that the haven’t changed it
The pertinent bit for the last week in February is
Temperatures at the start of next week will be around average for the time of year, and probably slightly above average in the north. However, there will be a trend toward colder weather by the end of the week and into the following week, as winds turn predominately easterly. Wintry showers may develop, with the potential for some significant snowfalls focused on southern, central or eastern areas. The location and intensity of any snowfall will be uncertain until much nearer the time.
The first week in March is similar
Worth pointing out cold is hard to shift especially if the theory works that the jet stream is slowed down

Whether a lobe of Canadian vortex entering the Atlantic is enough to thwart this remains to be seen

Could be some treacherous roads tonight

Looks like we have a little land-based convective showers going on today. Definitely beginning to have a bit of power in that sunshine.

Recent shower developing in Dublin pepped up on approach.

I was just going to mention that there is definitely some land based convection occurring today. Looks like a recent strike between Lusk and Skerries in North Dublin too which further backs up this idea.

Always unusual in the UK when it's the south and not the north mentioned for snowfall. The met office uk for the last 2 week have been very much on side with a cold spell.

I have never ever seen as many hailstones as I have seen in the last 12 hours. Unreal. Galway West.

White ground after a hail/snow shower here near UL. That was an interesting 10 minutes of precipitation!

2 dustings of snow melted today. A big difference already in how quick the snow melts in the sun to just two weeks ago.

Since Christmas week we've had quite a few dustings, light falls and one moderate fall of snow this winter. Much of it has been transitional. If it was colder throughout it would all amount for a good deal of snow this winter.

Similar story in east Galway. Accumulations of hail have hung around all day .
    More hail as I type.

After that whole load of showers and sunny intervals, it's absolutely beautiful at Grange now. Lovely blue sky!

In all that time, I managed to get through one whole book :P, quite remarkable because the weather was very variable during the showers with one minute hail, another minute lashing rain and another minute very sunny. It's like the weather didn't want me to read the books. I think that's what you call dedication :o.

I think I should take a break from the reading for a bit here and work on my November/December 2010 analysis/article.

Oops, I said too much.

Will do the usual NAO/stratosphere stuff soon.
