What's the word to cover all animals above microscopic level?

    As "animal" has the connotation of covering only mammals, reptiles and amphibians, what's the best word to cover all animals above microscopic level? Birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, but also insects, arachnids, gastropoda, etc.
