Where are you based? I'm in mallow and the Davis college there has beginner woodworking classes iirc. Also, the 'men's shed' organisation do a lot of that kind of stuff

i did a beginners carpentry course in hartstown in d15; mainly concentrated on the various types of joints. well worth the €120 or so for the ten week evening course.
