Looks like a weak storm will hit in about 8 days

Worth keeping an eye on things

Not what I was expecting but you can't complain about shoulder to head and a half glass with one other in the water - dreamy

Jose starting to look like he's on the right track - possibly 9 - 12 days away

This hurricane tracking is intriguing. Rodento, I know you have stuck a load of links up over the years but any chance of a post with up to date links and a bit of an idea as to how to use them? The big swell forecast for tonight/tomorrow, is that Irma? Generally, is it a big hit, or consistent swell over a few days? Thanks.

For hurricanes i use the Nation Hurricane Centre

    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

And if a storm is active the coastal watch warnings

    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at2+shtml/145735.shtml?cone#contents

Its good for a few days but with hurricanes it's sometimes hard to track

For a long term guesstimation the fnmoc navy swell charts

    https://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/wxmap_cgi/cgi-bin/wxmap_DOD_area.cgi?area=fnmoc_atlantic&set=All

Very good for swell direction for local conditions as well - way better than windguru or magicseaweed

Looking at the charts, I've no idea how you can decipher this. Pointer?

    Pure guesstimation

One hopes that the hurricane will be carried up the American coast line by the gulf stream and head a cross the Atlantic via the North Atlantic current to Ireland

If you follow the links you should get decent enough notice of time off

With Gert the sea was completely flat but every 10 minutes three or four stomper glassy waves came though

Cheers for the responses. I'll keep an eye on it and see if I can get a grasp. Otherwise, I'll be riding the ferry wave and dreaming of Irma.

Long range forecasts indicate we should get something late next week - just hope that winds play ball if thats the case

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,728 ✭✭✭rodento

Maybe block by a high pressure zone from crossing the Atlantic

Not all bad news - interesting stuff happening in the Atlantic

We need the winds coming in from the east,or glassy conditions...

Depends what the swell and winds enable - but would always go for glassy conditions over anything else - makes every thing that bit more relaxing and nothing beats clean glassy conditions especially when you can't see the wave your surfing on

Sounds nice, take it that was well north then. I was very surprised how quick it is drive to Tramore, you can be in wexico no time once you cross the river at New Ross you are almost there. Leaving at 7 we made it by 9:15 with one stop for food.

Going to play it by ear tomorrow - winds may just have a bit to much east for my liking but have Tuesday off :D
