Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If you seek attention you will get it.

Aye. If you don't get it on the United thread you'll hopefully get it here.
Nobody will have a gander at your previous posts.

I'm not a betting man at all but I imagine you wouldn't get great odds on that.
I'd say you would get something on a 3-4 result not huge odds but something.

I see you're not a gambling man either :pac:

Relax and don't be worrying Niall. Virtually every Liverpool fan worth his/her salt is behind the manager.
You've ney reason to be arsed.

As far as this season is concerned, my goal for the league is the same as last season - to manage 2ppg. Exactly what we actually ended up finishing with last season. Get that, whilst getting to the knockouts in Europe, and i'll be satisfied with calling it progress. Anything extra would be a bonus for me, though I would love the FA cup (now that the EFL is gone).

No offence but how many points per game we achieve is irrelevant.

Some seasons you can win the league or finish 4th with similar amounts.

4th again would do me. And hopefully build on it this time.

I think we waited a long time for the last top 4 finish and then wasted it to a large degree.

It's just one of those things. You can have a static goal, or a shifting goal. We don't know what achieves 4th... it could be 80 points. I'd not consider it a failed season if we got 79 and missed out.

Personally I prefer to think of a tangible, quantifiable improvement, where even if you don't reach your ideal result (fourth plus), you know where you stand in the longer term. More points year on year is my goal in the long term. The success that those points attain will follow.

I just refuse to let my perspective on what the team does be skewed by what others do in games that don't relate to us. Obviously I want us to win the league and such, but for my judgment on what our team does game by game, point by point, i'll be satisfied with 2ppg and whatever that happens to bring.

You have a lovely way of phrasing things, Rebel. A really stylish way of making a point that's always easy on the eye.
    I admire you for that.
But maybe sometimes practical things are more important.
If we nab 4th then who cares how many points per game we get?
How many points per game did we get the year Arsenal finished ahead of us with Houllier in charge?
Or Rodgers that time? A slip away.
    It's sad but it insignificant.
    2.25ppg and all that, it's a nonsense
    You finish where you finish.

Same 2pp should get us top 4 them knockout stages of the CL and one of the domestic cups would be great.

But top 4 again shows signs of improvement and progression from where the club has been since Rafa left.

The numbers aren't a nonsense, they show you how the team is performing. 76 points (2ppg) is a good target, if a team achieves that target then historically they make the top 4 which is the target for the season.

    2016/17 : 4th
    2015/16 : 2nd
    2014/15 : 3rd
    2013/14 : 5th* (4th: 79pts)
    2012/13 : 3rd
    2011/12 : 3rd
    2010/11 : 2nd
    2009/10 : 3rd
    2008/09 : 4th
    2007/08 : 4th
    2006/07 : 3rd
    2005/06 : 4th
    2004/05 : 4th
    2003/04 : 3rd
    2002/03 : 3rd
    2001/02 : 4th
    2000/01 : 2nd
    1999/00 : 2nd
    1998/99 : 3rd
    1997/98 : 3rd
    1996/97 : 1st
    1995/96 : 3rd

In 2013/14 we weren't a slip away from winning the league - that was a dream. In the first half of that season (19 games) Liverpool picked up 36 points (1.89ppg). In the second half of the season we picked up 48 points (2.52ppg). Arsenal (1997/98) are the only team to have previously had a 12 point swing in their form for the second half of the season and win the league title. The 2.52ppg run was record breaking league champion form but you are kidding yourself if you believe Liverpool were genuine contenders for the title that season.

In 2008/9, Liverpool finished second with 86 points, our highest points total in the 38 game era. Benitez delivered the consistency you expect from a team that is challenging for the title - 44 points in the first 19 games (2.31ppg), 42 points in the second half of the season (2.21ppg).

In 2001/2, Houllier's Liverpool finished second with 80 points. Liverpool picked up 37 points in the first half of the season (1.95ppg), and 43 in the second half (2.26ppg). Arsenal won the league with 87 points.

The PPG numbers show that in both 2008/9 and 2001/2 which are both considered title challenging seasons that even if our best half season's form was extended over the full season we wouldn't have won the title. The team weren't consistent enough.

    2008/9 : 2 x 44 = 88 points (Man Utd won the league with 90 points)
    2001/2 : 2 x 43 = 86 points (Arsenal won the league with 87 points)

1996/97 isn't considered a title challenge season but Liverpool were top of the league after 19 games with 38 points (2ppg). The form faded in the second half of the season and we finished fourth with 68 points.

    1996/97 : 2 x 38 = 76 points (Man Utd won the league with 75 points)

You can choose to ignore the numbers, but whether you like them or not they are part of the analysis of the game.

So we challenged for the league when we finished 4 points behind, and 7 points behind, but not when we finished 2 points behind? Is there some humour I'm missing?

But even aside from that stats are often way misleading. If stats were half what people make out then jermaine Pennant wudda beena good buy and Sam Allardyce would have been a great manager.

    Hmmm ambiguity for me Clive.

On Thursday I wondered if there were maybe too many cooks with the Coutinho +3 attack formation and that 3 + a striker might well be more focused and yet if Sturridge is the point of attack can he put in the shift needed? Mind you it'll still be a front three presumably so the pressure will still be on them all to deliver a goal by direct shooting.

He's a mystery man, drops out of games with no explanation. I knew there was something going on with him, mentioned it many times.

Having a specialist striker in this team would make such a difference. Sure, you can argue that with such a player our system might not be as fluid/flexible but I don't see why not. Imagine a Torres or a Suarez taking the goalscoring burden off Salah, Sané or Firmino.
Watching Kane today - Lukaku and Morata too - and it shows the value of a finisher. What we have with Firmino - brilliant, by the way - is like Spurs asking, say, Eriksen to shoulder the burden of finishing off the chances created.
We have a specialist striker, sure, but he's now quite immobile and therefore won't get a consistent enough run in the team to get his goalscoring touch back again. I don't blame him for snatching at chances like he had against Spartak the other night.

Read a few weeks ago (not sure if it was English or German newspaper) he is having personal problems, his missus is reported to have had an affair with a known criminal and he has it in for the family now. Was reported that a flat he rented on holiday in his homeland whilst he was on holiday was gassed. He woke up the next morning and couldnt remember a thing....

The lad seems to be carrying a lot of baggage.

Addionally just read in the German press that Klopp wants Keita in Jan and is willing to pay to get him.

The gangster & lovren story is a load of twaddle.... the gangster worked as a lumberjack or something for minimum wage in Croatia.... he's not really in the gangster territory really.... petty crook at best.

Lovren being robbed on hols was unrelated by all accounts.

Yeah our corners are woeful. At least we seem (I think) to have stopped this nonsense whereby the corner taker raises his two hands in the air, which was our friendly way of telling the nearest defender to get ready coz this is about to hit you in the head, which is always did and still does.

At this stage I'd rather see us just take short corners and retain possession because at the mo it's too easy for the opponent, concede a corner and then clear it without a whisp of danger.

We'll no doubt score a cracker from a header via a corner tomorrow now :D

Hamann is a bit crude at times. He should know it's never easy at Liverpool, ex player making fun of current player is a bit low.
Lovern was brilliant in Klopp first season.
